United sink Pirates

Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a League match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Maritzburg goals were scored in the first half by Fadlu Davids and Mario Booysen while Andile Jali pulled one back for Pirates.

Pirates’ defence was simply woeful on the night and United took full use of that scoring twice from set-piece situations where players were left unmarked. Maritzburg’s pace up front was also too much for the Soweto giants to handle.

In the 19th minute Fadlu Davids almost grabbed the game’s opening goal with a glancing header from a corner-kick. Luckily for Pirates, Moeneeb Josephs was at his best to produce a finger tip save while at full stretch to touch the ball over the bar for a corner-kick.

The Pirates marking, or lack thereof, at the corner-kick was what caused the game’s first goal in the 25th minute when Davids headed Maritzburg United in front. Kurt Lentjies whipped in a good cross to find an unmarked Davids ten yards out and he made no mistake, grabbing his seventh league goal of the season, 1-0.

The Buccaneers defence simply went to sleep at the set-piece and when they did it again in the 31st minute they were once again made to pay the ultimate price. Again Lentjies whipped in an in-swinging free-kick from the left side of the filed and again a United player was left unmarked, this time Bester was the man.

Bester’s header, however, was superbly saved by Josephs who unfortunately palmed the ball into the path of Mario Booysen who made no mistake in firing the ball home from only a couple of yards out, 2-0.

The Team of Choice nearly scored their third goal six minutes later when Obada got behind the Pirates defence and only had Josephs to beat, but instead of picking a spot and delicately placing his shot, Obada decided to opt for power. Josephs was up to the challenge, punching the ball away from danger.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane did pull the best out of Maritzburg’s goalkeeper in the 64th minute when he unleashed a powerful shot from just outside the 18 yard box. Shu-Aib Walters, however, produced a fine save diving full stretch to his right to tip the effort around the post.

There was nothing Walters could do in the 72nd minute when Andile Jali pulled a goal back for the Buccaneers. Jali expertly finished a good passing move by Pirates, firing home from just inside the 18-yard box, 2-1.

This lead to an onslaught by the Buccaneers on the United goal, but despite their best efforts they could not find the equalising goal as the game ended 2-1.

Perhaps it's time they change that scary logo, it scares the hell out of their own players. I 2 would not perform playing with that scary skeleton embedded over my heart beat.

News: One of the Pirates officials Floyd Mbele complained yesterday saying, 'Sundowns was losing 2-0 and their match was abandoned; and we were 2-0 down as well in the first half, how can our match not called off; and Chiefs match was abandoned as well; aren't we all the big 3, i wil take this matter to Zola Majavu'. Pirates are doomed. Yes I love seeing this team loosing but to be honest, they are loosing it.

If they will get rid of that pink colour in their jersey and go back to their traditional colours, maybe just maybe they will start being the competitive pirates we know

At least KC fans know who's killing their team i.e. Bobby. Look at their latest scandal from their recruit (Ntuka). I suspect he just seen him in a shebeen and bought him 4 quarts for him to play for KC.

As for my team, I dont know who's destroying it. It must be in the boardroom. I'm just happy for my home province team MU.

@BrokeFan: That's an EMBLEM sir, not a logo.

Yes that pink colour was never a in the traditional colours of yourteam.....unless you are stupid and want to laugh from useless shiit from KALI cos your team lost......then you wont see a problem with that pink colour.

Dont take your anger on me baba.....your team is pathetic so as you,.........MORON!!!!!!!

We draw against against Gu,12th in the log in one of the poorest leagues in africa and loose to Maritzburg United, and we are not suppose to complain,i dont get it.is it the coach or the players

lets face it the players dont want to krol anymore and they will see to it that he goes, simply by loosing to the teams they are not suppossed to loose to.

makhosi-there goes your 3 points

Once a Pirate always but this is too much to take

Hehehe, good observation man. But this once I'll say, Pirates played very very well and should have scored at least 2 more goals. Good substitution by Krol when put in Shaka Zulu.

The trend in this season shows that Pirates can't score more than one goal in a match. So if you score 2 goals against them, you are guaranteed a win. Chiefs and Celtic just need to finish the job

krol must go now enough its enough.

I think Krol should really talk to this Mbuyane boy!!! This boy is very wicked oh! He doesnt want to pass the ball even when players are in a good a spot than him to score he even use his weak leg to shoot! Who told him that he is better than the rest of the players...? This also goes to Teko too... Boy you must learn how to be a team player especially with those weak shots of yours!!! Now Maritzburg caught us sleeping in the middle of the park several times, Chansa and Jali, we need communication from you boys, if one attacks, one should hold the field from right in the middle of the pitch and win those cleared balls... Moneeb, you always do us proud! Defence was caught ball watching several times, Makonese you too also should communicate more with mahamutsa who is mostly ball watching. I suggest coach should put Thwala back to central defence because he overlaps unneccessarily. If the team play like they did yesterday, chips will make a meal of us...
