Cosmos' relegation problems mount

Posted: 10 February 2010 Time: 22:04

Jomo Cosmos lost for the first time in six Absa Premiership matches at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening as they went down by a single goal to Bloemfontein Celtic. The only goal of the game was scored by Celtic’s Patrick Malokase in the 31st minute.

The defeat adds to Cosmos’ relegations concerns as they lost their 12th game of the season; with three games to play they remain rooted to the bottom of the PSL table in 16th position.

There was a distinct lack of urgency in Cosmos’ play throughout the first half and even when opportunities came their way they did not make their good fortune count, as was the case in the seventh minute when Celtic defender Michael Khaile’s poor clearance fell to Siza Dlamini, who missed the target.

Cosmos were even given a let off when they should have conceded a penalty in the 11th minute. Lucky Mhlathe hacked at Celtic’s Tlou Segolela but he was not punished for what looked like a certain penalty, and instead Celtic were awarded a corner. Cecil Oerson swung it in from the left and Johannes Motlhaping managed to head the ball goal-wards but it hit Ousmane Berthe and went out for another corner.

Just past the half hour mark Ezenkosi were punished for their negative play when Malokase scored to put Celtic ahead. Prince Olomu sent in a cross from the left, Berthe made a poor diving headed attempt at clearing the ball and Oerson found Malokase, who thought quickly upon receiving the ball and delightfully chipped it over Avril Phali to put Celtic ahead.

The introduction of Sekou Camara in the second half seemed to add more bite to the Cosmos attack and it was he who was at the heart of setting up Smith in the 62nd minute to have a shot at goal from the edge of the Celtic 18 yard area but he did not trouble Tignyemb, who managed to make a comfortable save. Camara himself had a shot of goal in the 66th minute around 18 yards from goal.

The hosts should have been handed a penalty in the 74th minute when Khaile tugged at Smith’s shirt. With his back towards goal the Cosmos striker still managed to play the ball to Elhadji Samb, who hit the ball at the first attempt but missed the target.

Cosmos pressed for the equaliser in the final ten minutes of the second half and put Celtic under continuous pressure but could not get the breakthrough they sought.

Hard luck Jomo..... May be you should STOP trying to get Bafana Bafana coaching job & concetrate in your team. This time if Cosmos gets relegated they won't make it back in the near future and to make things worsr / better there is noone willing to sell premier league status these days.

People who lie for you will also lie for you.It is the privilege to enjoy publicity, particularly, via print media since their articles serve as permanent records.Sometimes the same articles haunt the same people they were meant to promote. It is high time time that we -football fanatics -reminded Mbulelo Mabizela that he was once the promising player who reached his but faded hastily like the colour of white clothes which become pale when they had been washed in filthy water. In 2002/3 season he won Kick Off Footballer of the Year because he played amongst the best Pirates' players unfortunately he consistency, speedily, because he quenched his thirst with intoxicating beverage, excessively. He should not liken himself to Lionel Messi or to any other international football icon of that ilk nor should he think that Bafana Bafana will not play successfully without his services. If he is selected again he will only add numbers not the value.Media helped Mendu,Makalakalane,McCarthy ,Mokoena to mention a few , to air their views.Mendu and Makalakalane were duped complacent. They were made enemies of their team mates consequenty they quited football prematurely.Mokoena became the palooka to the eyes of the media when he refused to play under the leadership of arrogant Dumitru.McCarthy was viewed as the missing link in Bafana's strike force but when rejoined he was duped the new Big Mama-fattest player.Mabizela is not ideal enough to look down upon the Khumalos,Fransmans,Mokoenas and so forth. The media should teach him business ethics-negotiate professionally and respect opinions and decisions of decision makers de facto.
