SuperSport close in on third title

SuperSport United gave Gavin Hunt a first win, 2-1, over Santos as their coach on Tuesday night.

SuperSport United’s title race remains on track following a hard-earned win over Santos at the Athlone Stadium.

The game ignited after 10 minutes when a superb move involving Brent Carelse, Daine Klate and Anthony Laffor saw the Liberian’s header tipped over the bar.

And from Jabu Maluleke’s 11th minute corner, United found themselves in front as Ricardo Katza netted with a header.

The champions were 2-0 up in the 30th minute as some uncertainty from Tshepo Motsoeneng allowed Dario Monteiro to convert a simple chance.

Santos looked dead and buried at that stage but they came back to hit the woodwork through Graham King’s 36th minute effort before scoring in the 39th minute as Tyren Arendse tapped home Phikolethu Spelman’s cross.

It took a while for second half action to heat up as United tried to slow the game down.

It was certainly Santos who ended the match the stronger side, having chances through King, Spelman and a late header by Musa Otieno, but United survived to take the points despite having Letladi Madubanya sent off in the 75th minute.

The only way Downs can wrestle the title from SSU is by winning our next 2 games and putting more pressure on the 3 games!

SSU has all the advantage now, they the points and goals as well. Downs on the other hand is still to work for the points and goals. Infact i still believe that for Downs to stand a chance, we must win the next 2 games!

leSundawana : 2010-02-10 06:49 [ Report ]

He he he he, LeSundawana buddy, I see you miss the point about last night's game...

Let me spell it out to you: We (CHIEFS) lost the championship by failing to WIN those 2 (2010) opening games against Swallows & Cosmos (...AND DONT TELL ME KAK THAT WE LOST IT AT BEGINING OF THE SEASON OR BEFORE THE SEASON EVEN STARTED OR BY BUY 1 GET 10 SHIT). We lost the race only last week and VV (after realising that the going is definitely gone) wanted to give the rest of the players (especially guys that saw little action this season) some game time.

I was happier to see LEBESE, YENDE, NAHAYO, MASHANGO, etc play last night THAN the result of the game. I hope VV gives more players a chance, especially those newly promoted youngsters (if he registers them with PSL).

Ja, the number of red cards that Supersport got this season and the manner in which they dished, leaves a lot to be desired. Is there a force trying to destabilize them? Just wondering...

Ha ha ha ha LeSandawana "we all know that @ downs its not about money,u all know our Pres is loaded",

Ha ha ha ha BABA, what's the point of spending fortune on this underperforming team? If your Pres' money wins everything then your CIRCUS should be winning everything and be no.1 in AFRICA,,,,,,,,oh by the way: What happen to your 5 year plan that was so much talked about 10 years ago?

You cannot implement MINING policies in football; since when do we have geologists in football?

At least I will sleep peacefully from now on knowing that none of the Soweto teams will win the league again. It's now 8 PSL titles for Pretoria and 4 for Soweto. The Pretoria derby is now the best derby in SA in football terms at least. Look, when Pirates and Chiefs play in the league these days it's just to decide the top 8 positions. The outcome doesn't really say anything as far as the title is concerned. Contrast that with Sundowns and Supersport. The match between the two giants of SA football can decide the destination of the league title. I know that the Soweto derby is the most advertised-supported derby in SA. But that is all it is. It is just a fight of lightweights that happen to have more fans than heavyweights of SA football (the Pretoria teams)... and I'm not talking about history people. My focus is on the PSL. Not giants of the erstwhile NSL.

SSU can celebrate now, but we MaSundawana r going for the taking. By this weekend, after beating Santos everyone will see that Downs mean biznis. This one is ours. As 4 chiefs, at no stage did they look like title contenders, so Thabang just zip it & hope that u do well next season. VV's big mistake was to underestimate Musona's ability, now the might not be effective & agile in the next season.

Anyway we r going all out ka bo Yellow

The thing about this team is that every player scores goal. From the defence to the strikers, to the subsitutes ate the bank.

Look at how Dario Monterio has grabbed his starting chance with both hands. Who will stop the champs?

This league is heading to one direction now. Who ever think sundowns is going to take it might have been hanging around at Mambushi's Tuck shop.

The question is though........

1. Why a team that claim they have all the best players fail to dominate the PSL.....yet a team that have cheap players (CHIEFS) as they say always give them a run for their money

2. Why all the stars in that team rely on the ref for some results???
