Renteria goal downs Santos

Posted: 6 February 2010 Time: 18:01

Luis Renteria’s first-half goal was enough as Platinum Stars beat Santos 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Stars finished the match with 10 men after Coldrin Coetzee was sent off late on as the hosts battled to hang on for the win.

First half spoils were relatively evenly shared, with both teams having their fair share of chances on goal.

It was Stars though, who made sure that they took a one-goal advantage into the break when Renteria rifled home a low shot after good work from Henrico Botes.

Prior to the goal, Santos had enjoyed a few opportunities of their own, but Phikolethu Spelman found his radar somewhat off as he twice shot wide, while Tyren Arendse did hit the target.

he Cape side ended the half strongly, but could not find the goal they needed as Ryan Chapman and Spelman shot wide just before the break.

Following the restart, Erwin Isaacs was full of running for Santos, but twice failed to make use of great opportunities when he fired wide from Thabiso Ntloana’s 52nd and 58th-minute crosses.

At the other end, Botes should have given his side the breathing space of a second goal, but his header was a weak one.

The pressure carried on mounting from the Cape Town team, but neither Tyren Arendse nor Isaacs could not find an equaliser with their efforts in the 68th and 73rd minutes respectively. Tapuwa Kapini then made a good save to keep out Spelman’s 80th-minute shot before Musa Otieno sent an 84th-minute header wide.

Dinaledi had Coetzee sent off a minute from time for a second bookable offence, but made it through to the full time whistle to ensure the three points on offer.
