Aces, Wits play to tame draw

Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits played to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership match at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Wednesday evening, with Sifiso Vilakazi opening the scoring for the Clever Boys before Sandile Zuke equalised for AmaZayoni.
The game came to life in the 24th minute when Wits took the lead. Defender Patrick Phungwayo provided the assist for former Ajax striker Vilakazi to fire the ball past Oscar Ramogoadi from 10 metres out.
However, the visitors’ lead last just four minutes. Lindokuhle Mbatha’s corner kick wasn’t adequately cleared by the Wits defence and midfielder Zuke blasted the ball into the back of the net from long range to level the scores at 1-1.
The majority of play was centred in the middle of the field and, as a result, scoring chances were hard to come by. The sides battled manfully but a lack of game time due to the long PSL recess meant both were far from their best.
In the end the game fizzled out to a fairly tame draw. The result is probably a better one for Wits, who have maintained the seven-point gap to the bottom two after Cosmos also played to a draw on Tuesday.
