Ajax returned to Absa Premiership action with a 2-0 win over over Platinum Stars on Tuesday night.
The first half failed to produce many chances on goal as the commitment of the two sets of players left few gaps in defence.
Lance Davids put Ajax ahead with a 35th minute free kick that deflected in off the wall from around 35 metres out – prior to that the only real efforts on goal came from a weak attempt at a close range finish from Henrico Botes in the fifth minute, and a 20th minute Nathan Paulse volley which failed to find the target from a tight angle.
The second half produced more in the way of scoring chances – just after the break Diyo Sibisi had a close range effort blocked while Mbulelo Mabizela was left disappointed after his header struck the upright and then bounced across the goalmouth.
It appeared as if an equaliser could be on the cards for Dinaledi as they upped the temp midway through the second half.
However, Steve Komphela’s men were unable to convert their chances as Dillon Sheppard’s shot went too close to Hans Vonk, who then did well to make a point blank save from a goal-bound Bradley Grobler.
Stars were punished for not converting their opportunities in the 84th minute when Thulani Serero netted Ajax’s second, turning home the ball from six yards out after a flick on from Paulse.
In the end the score-line was certainly harsh on Stars, who were by no means second best for most of the night.
