Free State Stars secured a 3-0 win over Platinum Stars at the Moruleng Stadium on Saturday afternoon, easing themselves away from the danger zone in the process.

After Kingston Nkatha’s early goal, substitute Manti Moholo’s second half brace secured the points for Gordon Igesund’s men.

The visitors got off to a cracking start and opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with Aleni Lebyane providing a great pass from the right to hand Nkhatha a sight of goal – the striker fired a low shot past Tapuwa Kapini.

Two minutes after conceding the lead, Platinum Stars had a chance to draw themselves level when Alton Meiring ran onto a good long, ball but Kennedy Mweene reacted quickly to sprint off his line and hack it clear.

Ea Lla Koto almost made it 2-0 a few moments later, but Lebyane pulled his left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area just wide.

Just past the 30-minute mark Dinaledi had their best chance of the half, with Vusumuzi Madinane beating Mweene to a clever ball over the visitors’ defence, but the midfielder’s lob looped inches wide.

Just before the break, Free State Stars again should have doubled their lead, but Saaitjheni Tsotetsi somehow missed from point-blank range after another great piece of set-up play by Lebyane.

Free State Stars made had two early half-chances in the second half, with both Matome Madimabe and Paulus Masehe putting low shots wide of the goal. The visitors had also made two changes at the break, with Sifiso Thomo and Fabio Marinho coming off the bench.

However, it was their third change just before the hour-mark that proved a masterstroke. Manti Moholo replaced Nkhatha in the 59th minute and scored with his first touch, converting a perfectly weighted pass from the excellent Lebyane.

And Moholo was at it again nine minutes later. Lebyane was again involved in the build-up, but it was a clever flick from Thomo that allowed Moholo to slip in at the far post and score his second of the day.

Any hopes Dinaledi may have had of an unlikely comeback were put to bed with 15 minutes to play when substitute Luis Renteria was shown a straight red card for kicking out in retaliation to a foul from Ayanda Gcaba.
