Santos substitute Orlin Powell scored a last gasp goal at the Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday night to earn the Cape side a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows.
Arrows scored first through Richard Henyekane.
Both teams struggled to create goal opportunities early on and it took until the 25th minute before the first chance arrived when Bafo Biyela’s free kick went marginally over goal.
The home side came close to scoring three minutes later when Tyren Arendse tried to slide the ball into an empty net after Arrows keeper Thulasizwe Khuzwayo failed to deal with Thabiso Ntloana’s cross, but Arendse’s goal-bound effort was cleared off the line.
Santos raised their game as the break drew near and had two good chances in the last five minutes of the half as first Graham King headed wide after a good pass from Arendse and then Spelman fired over from 14-yards out after King had set him free on goal.
Arrows took the lead in the 54th minute when Richard Henyekane’s free kick took a lucky deflection and flew past Santos keeper Tshepo Motsoeneng.
The home side fought back hard after that set-back, but failed to make use of their chances as the likes of Eleazar Rodgers and King were wasteful in front of goal.
Motsoeneng looked to take things into his own hands in the 85th minute when he launched a shot from well over 60 metres out, which had Arrows goal keeper Khuzwayo scrambling back to tip the ball over for a corner.
This appeared to lift the Peoples’ Team as they spent the final minutes camped out in the Arrows box, with their persistence finally paying off in the final minute of injury time when Powell scored from close range after a scramble in the box.
