Ajax fail to inspire

Ajax Cape Town failed to take advantage of the chances that came their way against AmaZulu at the Boland Stadium on Wednesday afternoon and were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Both teams played some good football at times and there was certainly no shortage of chances on the day.
While the Urban Warriors may have been disappointed with the result at home, they at least had a point to show for their efforts against an AmaZulu side who missed some great chances to seal the win.
The home side were on top in the early stages of the game, with a couple of chances falling the way of Sifiso Vilakazi, whose touch was too heavy and saw the opportunities going to waste.
In the fifth minute Ajax were close to going ahead when Dipsy Selolwane fired a volley just over the bar, with AmaZulu’s first chance only arriving in the 12th minute when Tsweu Mokoro went well wide with a shot from the right hand side of the box.
As the game went on the visiting side got stronger and more chances duly arrived as Belux Kasonga pulled an effort just past the upright in the 17th minute and then Dumisani Ngwenya volleyed wide after a route one attack.
And it was certainly the visiting team that finished the half the stronger team, having a flurry of decent chances just before the break.
In the 37th minute Bradley Ritson missed a great chance when he headed Mokoro’s cross wide of goal from just a couple of yards out.
The first half had been action paced and it was not much different in the second as Warren Bishop struck the goalpost with a header from Siphiwe Mkhonza’s thrown in and then both Thulani Serero and Sameehg Doutie failed to make use of chances right in front of goal.
While the match remained evenly balanced, it was Ajax who looked more threatening in attack, a point illustrated when Franklin Cale fired over the bar from 20-yards and then George Maluleka failed to round of an excellent move in the 81st minute when he shot weakly over the top.
Both sides pushed hard in the closing minutes, but there were no further clear cut chances as the game ended goalless.
