Maritzburg defeat Celtic

Posted: 9 December 2009 Time: 21:56

Maritzburg United beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Two first half goals from Rudolf Bester and Kurt Lentjies was enough to seal the Team of Choice the three points on the night. Three points that will ease the pressure on them and their coach, Ernest Middendorp, as they move further away from the relegation zone.

United were simply phenomenal in the first 45 minutes as the dictated the midfield battle and hence controlled the majority of the possession.

Celtic, on the other hand, were lethargic and unable to find their rhythm in front of their home fans.

And it certainly didn’t help when United took an early lead through Bester. It only took the visitors eight minutes to carve-up the Phunya Sele Sele defence with a superb passing movement, and when Bester got the opportunity to fire on goal he did not hesitate to put his team in front from about 12-yards out, 1-0.

Thereafter the Celtic defence seemed to tighten up a bit as United, despite dominating the game, could not really create any clear-cut opportunities on goal.

However, as Bloemfontein seemed to be finding their rhythm they fell another goal behind after a wonder strike from Lentjies in the 37th minute.

After picking the ball up in the midfield, Lentjies drove forward and unleashed a pile-driver of a shot from 30 yards out. Patrick Tignyemb in the Celtic goal had no chance as he watched the ball sail past him into the top right hand corner, 2-0.

Celtic went into the half time break a dejected side and were looking to do a lot better in the second half.

But the home side continued to struggle to find their rhythm and it looked like it was not to be their night and this was none more evident than when second half substitute Sandile Ndlovu had a great opportunity to pull a goal back.

Ndlovu found himself in acres of space and had a free header on goal from only six yards out, but he failed to really test the keeper heading his effort straight at Shu-Aib Walters.

Nonetheless, Phunya Sele Sele were not disheartened by this and continued to pile the pressure on the United goal, but much like Maritzburg in the first half they could not convert their dominance into clear-cut opportunities on goal.

In the end the Team of Choice was able to hold onto their two goal lead and picked up a vital three points to take them further away from the bottom of the league table.
