Stars’ slump to surprise defeat

Platinum Stars slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Mpumalanga Black Aces in an Absa Premiership match played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Dinaledi have been in great form of late, winning four of their last five matches, which makes this triumph by AmaZayoni all the more unexpected.
Aces shocked their hosts by taking an early lead, with Mpho Maleka striking the ball past Tapuwa Kapini in the Stars goal after good set-up play by Godfrey Nobula.
Dinaledi looked to hit back in quick time, but Mbulelo Mabizela’s 20-yard free kick was well saved by Oscar Ramogadi.
There were few goal scoring chances created in the remainder of the first half, though Stars defenders George Mofokeng and Mabizela both had good aerial opportunities that they failed to capitalise on.
Mofokeng again missed out on a headed chance early in the second half, with the defender failing to hit the target after meeting a fine cross from Dillon Sheppard.
Stars seemed to be taking control of the game but AmaZayoni were certainly still a threat whenever they got the chance to get forward, and Clifford Mulenga almost doubled their lead on 65 minutes with a left footed effort that crashed back off the upright.
Stars pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing minutes of the game but the Aces defence, with the excellent Ramogadi behind them, did well to hold out and secure a potentially crucial victory.
