Stars stun Maritzburg

Platinum Stars beat Maritzburg United 3-1 in an Absa Premiership clash at Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Maritzburg goal was scored by Noah Chivuta while Norikazu Murakami and Dillon Sheppard scored for Stars and Tashrique Goldman scored an own-goal late in the game. Maritzburg played most of the game with 10-men after James Madidilani was sent off.

Stars started well and took an early lead when Japanese striker Norikazu Murakami turned home Sheppard’s cross in the seventh minute.

The home team’s hopes of getting back into the game were dealt a major blow when defender James Madidilani was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 25th minute.

However, Maritzburg were given a great opportunity to draw level when Mbulelo Mabizela fouled Rudolph Bester in the 18-yard box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Midfielder Noah Chivuta converted the spot kick to make it 1-1 in the 34th minute.

Yet parity was short lived for the Team of Choice, as Dillon Sheppard put Dinaledi back into the lead just before the interval, sweeping home a shot from close range after an assist by Stanley Kgatla.

The second half saw Stars take control of the game, though they had to wait until the 78th minute to effectively wrap up the result, as Almiro Lobo’s effort forced goalkeeper Tashrique Goldman into scoring an unfortunate own goal.

The visitors could have added to their advantage in the remainder of the match but in the end they settled for a 3-1 victory.
