Santos beat Ajax Cape Town 1-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.
The goal was scored by Erwin Isaacs.
Boebie Solomons’ side had to play the last 20 minutes with ten men after the dismissal of Bonginkosi Macala, but the reward of sitting in second place on the log, six points behind leaders SuperSport United, will have made the effort worthwhile. The Urban Warriors drop to fourth on the table.
Santos took the lead somewhat against the run of play in the 30th minute. Winger Graham King burst free down the left channel and, faced with only goalkeeper Hans Vonk to beat, he selflessly squared for Erwin Isaacs who turned home the ball to make it 1-0.
Ajax dominated the second half but they struggled to create scoring chances. The visitors did manage to carve out a good opening in the 57th minute after a very well worked passing movement, but Vilakazi’s weak shot was easily smothered by Tshepo Motsoeneng.
With 20 minutes to play the People’s Team were reduced to ten men, with right-back Bongi Macala dismissed after receiving his second yellow card for an unnecessary foul on Aboubacar Fofana.
Fofana came close to bringing Santos level on 78 minutes, turning smartly in the penalty area, only to blast his effort wide of the upright.
Santos almost doubled their lead with a rare attack in the second half, as Spelman powered a header just over the crossbar from a corner kick with just under ten minutes to play in regulation time.
