Sundowns held to a draw

Posted: 28 November 2009 Time: 17:22

Mamelodi Sundowns slipped up in the title race on Saturday afternoon after they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Free State at a blazing hot Goble Park.

Substitute Sipho Nkosi’s goal 11 minutes from time did the business; this after Sundowns had scored twice in three minutes through Katlego Mphela and Siyanda Xulu after Aleni Lebyane’s first half goal.

The Brazilians started well enough, but it was Stars who took the lead on 15 minutes when Lebyane finished from a good counter-attack after Matty Pattison had lost possession.

Sundowns, however, continued to dominate the first half, but could find no joy in front of goals.

That wasn’t a problem after the break though, as two goals in three minutes gave them the advantage.

First Mphela scored his 12th League goal of the season, heading Koketso Mmotong’s cross into the far corner. Then, on 59 minutes, Xulu rose highest to head home Mphela’s pin-point corner.

Stars looked dead and buried as Sundowns continued to dominate, but they kept their nerve and were rewarded when Nkosi reacted quickest to finish off Mdluli’s hopeful free-kick into the area.

There were some chances at either end for a winner, but in the end the two sides settled for a draw.

Hard luck Brazillians we ca`nt win them all, with that being said Hristo should`nt have thrown the young Ngubane in the deep end at such a crucial stage of the match..... away from home nogal.

But I guess he thinks that high of the young man and that is not a bad thing at all.

Killer, killer my man..... you need to keep on working very very hard on your game, you miss too many inviting chances for a someone said to be a complete poacher.

Hard luck Downs, Who`s next?

The heat and water break played a major role of us to draw and i suggest PSL must really look at the situation because it was blazing hot Free State.

Asked if he misses his days with Kaizer Chiefs, he revealed, “Eish, outhi yam, eish…I won’t say much but bazozwa (they will hear about my progress). I didn’t leave them because I had a problem with anyone. I left on good terms. The coaches were coming and going and some of them didn’t feel like working with star players. I had to go! Yes, I miss them. There can be Sundowns, Pirates or whoever, but Chiefs will always be Chiefs and you can’t take that away from them. They are very professional.”
