Celtic edge Free State Derby

Tlou Segolela’s deflected shot late on and a missed penalty from Duncan Lechesa saw Bloemfontein Celtic beat Free State Stars 1-0 at Charles Mopeli Stadium.

In an exciting clash, the rivalry between the teams came to a head in the 15th minute when both sets of players were involved in a melee; this after Excellent Walaza kicked at Jonathan Mensah while he was on the floor.

As Mensah came to his feet he had to be held back as he chased Walaza and both players ended up collecting a caution from the referee.

Moses Spandeel wasted a great chance when he fired over on 37 minutes, while Moholo was even closer moments later when he ran onto Kleinbooi Taaibos’ pass and his shit beat keeper Patrick Tignyemb, only to come back off the upright.

It was Moholo who was at the forefront of the action as the second half got under way and it took him just three minutes to have the Celtic keeper at full stretch to push away his effort from a tight angle on the right.

The resulting corner saw Celtic somehow fail to adequately clear the ball and it eventually landed up hitting the hand of their defender Sambu, which resulted in Stars getting a penalty. However, Lechesa’s effort was wide – a costly miss as it turned out.

Sthembiso Ngcobo missed two great chances within three minutes, while Celtic substitute Sandile Ndlovu shot wide in a one-on-one with Kennedy Mweene and Mark Mayambela hit the side-netting.

However, there was to be a goal, and it came with four minutes to go when Segolela’s shot deflected off Mensah and past Mweene.

I was impressed by the work done on the Charles Mopeli ground. It is looking much better now. Good for playing soccer.

The referee on the day was pathetic. FS hand ball in the area and Mensah sitting on the ball were not given. I'm just happy we beat them in the end. We deserved a win.

Free State Stars was not up to scratch. They can play better than that. By the way where was Thamane Motaung. That guy is a play-maker of note. I hope Gordon won't make them play route one football.

i believe sandile and walaza are not up to celtic standar, they there just to add up numbers. I still believe celtic need a powerfull striker, but for sandile and walaza must go back to where they come from and celtic must stop to buy rejects.
