Ernst Middendorp’s first Absa Premiership game in charge of Maritzburg United ended in a 3-2 defeat to SuperSport United at Loftus on Saturday.

Anthony Laffor was the star performer on a wet and heavy pitch, scoring two goals to guide his team to a victory that, at the very least, will maintain their two-point lead at the head of the table.

Jabulani Maluleke opened the scoring for SuperSport. Laffor doubled their lead before Bryce Aka pulled one back for Maritzurg. Laffor struck again, and Rudolf Bester got the second for Maritzburg ten minutes from time.

In the ninth minute Daine Klate’s close-range effort was bravely blocked by Tashrique Goldman, after Laffor had pulled back a difficult ball from the by-line.

Less than sixty seconds later Laffor created another opportunity for Klate with a curling cross from the right, but the winger tried an acrobatic volley that flew over the crossbar when a simple header probably would have brought him a goal.

Maluleke swept home the opening goal just before half-time to hand SuperSport a 1-0 lead.

The goal was created by Tsietsi Mahoa and Glen Salmon, with the former providing a long ball out of defence that was placed into Maluleke’s path with a header by the tall striker.

Nine minutes into the second half SuperSport went 2-0 up, with Laffor hammering a volley into the back of the net after Goldman had rushed off his line to try and punch clear a Mahoa cross.

The home side appeared to be cruising to three points, but with 20 minutes to go they lost concentration and allowed substitute Aka to turn home Bester’s cross.

But Laffor immediately restored their two-goal advantage with a well-placed low drive into the bottom corner.

The KwaZulu-Natal team didn’t give in, and Bester gave them hope of taking something out of the game when he scored a stunning long-range goal in the 81st minute.

However, the hosts held firm at the back and did enough to see out the game and claim victory.
