Pirates put three past Ajax

Posted: 21 November 2009 Time: 22:23

Orlando Pirates beat Ajax Cape Town 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

The goals were scored by Katlego Mashego, Phenyo Mongala and Rooi Mahamutsa.

It is Ajax’s second heavy defeat at the Soweto venue in less than a month, as they were hammered 6-0 by Golden Arrows in the MTN8 Cup Final in late October.

Ajax started the game on the front foot, pressuring Pirates with an aggressive and fast-paced approach.

However, the Buccaneers gradually worked their way into the ascendancy, finding particular joy down Ajax’s left where Clayton Daniels was playing out of position at left-back due to the absence of both Brett Evans and Aiden Jenniker.

On 28 minutes Pirates took the lead. After picking up the second ball from a corner kick, the Soweto side worked the ball to Katlego Mashego near the edge of the penalty area. The striker turned and hit a stunning low drive that nestled in the bottom corner, giving Hans Vonk no chance.

The Soweto giants started the second half strongly and doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute, with former University of Pretoria winger Phenyo Mongala playing a neat one-two with Lucky Lekgwathi before beating Vonk with a sharp, low shot.

Pirates continued to dominate and it seemed a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ they would add to their lead. With 20 minutes to go they were gifted the chance by Ajax right-back Nazeer Allie, who handled the ball in his own 18-yard area under pressure from Mongala.

Defender Rooi Mahamutsa dispatched the spot kick into the top corner, making it 3-0 and wrapping up the points for the Buccaneers.

Mashego could have put the cherry on top deep into injury time when he got beyond the Ajax rearguard, but the striker clipped the crossbar with his effort from a tight angle.

Though I am a Chiefs fan. Pirates win made my day. I hope to see that kind of determination in their next matches. Pirates and Chiefs have been dominating our football only by number of fans lately. I will be very happy to see these teams fighting for number one spot again. Congratulations to Pirates. All the best...

whether we like it or not the Chiefs win was controversial...........like many have asked if the ref saw "nothing" why the hell did he give Sweswe a yellow card?? GROW UP CHIEFS FANS. on another note, Pirates did well but i'm still not convinced they can stand to the league winners aka SSU. Downs has a better chance. and big ups to Krol for benching Mr. Pirates, hopefully he will come back hungry
