Braces by Phikolethu Spelman and Ryan Chapman saw Santos trouncing Maritzburg United 4-0 at Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday night.
In rainy conditions, there was little to write home about before the opening goal, which arrived in the 21st minute.
The goal was scored by Santos striker Phikolethu Spelman, who only just did enough to put the ball in the net from close range after Erwin Isaacs’ initial shot was blocked.
Maritzburg tried to get their game going and dominated the game for a while; but it as in vein as an error at the back by United keeper Tashrique Goldman allowed Spelman to calmly slot home his second goal to put Santos 2-0 up after 34 minutes. Soon after Isaacs had the chance for a third, but was unable to beat Goldman from the left hand side of the box.
Following the restart, the game looked evenly poised as the KZN side looked marginally more threatening in attack. However, the Santos rearguard was never under any undue pressure and when a goal came, it was at the other end of the field as Ryan Chapman out-stripped the Maritzburg defence before burying a shot from a tight angle into the far corner.
In the final minute of injury time Chapman completed the rout when he beat Goldman to the ball and rolled a ball over the into an empty net from 18-yards out.
The result sends Santos up to second position on the PSL log, although this could change after Sunday’s games.
