Students stand firm against Santos

Santos were unable to find the key to unlocking a stubborn Bidvest Wits defence in an Absa Premiership game which ended 0-0 at the Coetzenburg Stadium on Wednesday night.

The opening stages of the match were lively as Ryan Chapman and Tony Tsabedze had shots on goal for the home side, while for the visiting team, Calvin Kadi fired straight at Tshepo Motsoeneng in the sixth minute.

Bongi Macala then came close to an own-goal from his header in the 11th minute before Sifiso Myeni struck the side-netting from a tight angle a minute later.

Kadi then sent a header over the bar, before he was denied a shot on goal by the alert Motsoeneng.

Action then changed to the other end of the field as Chapman wildly fired over from inside the right hand side of the box in the 28th minute.

The closest either team came to scoring was in the 31st minute when Clever Boys defender Timothy Batabaire got on the end of Marawaan Bantam’s free-kick, but some excellent keeping by Motsoeneng saved the day.

Towards the end of the half Chapman had a shot from 12-yards out saved by Darren Keet, while Rene Richards’ 25-yard effort didn’t give Motsoeneng too many problems.

The second half failed to live up to the promise the match had hinted at in the opening 45 minutes.

In fact, the first chance of the second stanza came only in the 68th minute when Santos skipper Mogogi Gabonamong’s header from Graham King’s corner was well saved by Keet.

That was about it as far as chances were concerned in the remainder of the game; the exception being a couple of scraps in the Santos box which never really looked like profiting the Clever Boys.
