Free State Stars beat AmaZulu 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match played at Goble Park on Wednesday.
Jonathan Mensah got the winner in the 90th minute.
Usuthu played the better football early on and welcomed back the suspended Marc van Heerden who clearly made a difference to the visors outfit. Consequently it was van Heerden who came closest to scoring in the first half for AmaZulu in the 14th minute with a 20 yard free-kick, but unfortunately for the visitors his shot just skimmed the wrong side of the up-right.
Sthembiso Ngcobo should have broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when he found the ball at his feet 12 yards out from goal after a beautiful passing movement by Free State. But instead the striker squandered his golden opportunity, focusing more on power than placement and consequently his shot struck the woodwork.
Stars had another great chance to score a minute before the break when Tebelo Mofokeng rose above the AmaZulu defence to head a right-hand cross goal-wards. Mbongeni Mzimela, however, was on hand for the Usuthu producing a brilliant save to deny Mofokeng.
In the 74th minute Mweene produced a fantastic save to repel a powerful 22-yard Kasonga Bukasa shot. And again Mweene was on hand seven minutes later with yet another superb save, parrying a Dumisani Nqwenya shot for a corner-kick.
Then against the run of play and in the final minute of the match Ea Lla Koto grabbed the winning goal after a well-worked set-piece. Mpho Makola produced a pin-point out-swinging corner-kick to find Jonathan Mensah unmarked inside the six yard box.
Mensah made no mistake with a powerful header into the back of the net, 1-0, and allowed his side to steal victory at the death.
