Stars go down in rainy Stellenbosch

The rainy conditions in the Cape proved too much for Platinum Stars as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Santos at Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The goals were scored by Tyren Arendse and Phikolethu Spelman.

Santos had the better of the early chances, and in the heavy rain and on a muddy pitch Stars struggled to find much penetration against a stubborn Santos defence.

Santos enjoy the better of play, with Erwin Isaacs, Graham King and Tasleem Paulse combining nicely, but there was no end product.

The Tycoons ended the first half the stronger side, spending most of the final 10 minutes in their opponents half, and could perhaps have taken the lead if Henrico Botes had been able to keep his 20-yard volley on target three minutes before the break.

Eartly action in the second half was evenly contested, with the closest either side came to scoring arriving in the 62nd minute when Stars goal keeper Sandilands completely missed Sailor Tshabalala’s back pass and the ball rolled just wide of the post.

While a 0-0 draw looked a distinct possibility, the home side had other ideas as Romano Scott went on a mazy run in the 74th minute, beating several defenders before pulling the trigger.

His measured shot struck the upright, but Tyren Arendse was on hand to score from the rebound.

Five minutes later Santos doubled their lead when Phikolethu Spelman rose well to head Graham King’s free kick past Wayne Sandilands, to give Santos a deserved three points, especially based upon their impressive second half showing.
