Wits lose their record

Posted: 21 October 2009 Time: 22:40

Bidvest Wits lost their unbeaten Absa Premiership status on Wednesday night after a shock 1-0 defeat to Mpumalanga Black Aces.

To add insult to injury, it was a former Student, Clifford Mulenga, who netted the winner at Bidvest Stadium.

Wits were the first to ask questions in the second minute when Calvin Kadi connected a beautiful cross from Mark Haskins, but his header went inches wide.

Aces struggled to make inroads into the home side’s defence for most of the night, although they did make a positive start to the game, creating a great chance in the 22nd minute, but Nkosinathi Ogle’s shot went wide.

In the 36th minute the home side might have thought they have earned themselves a penalty after Sibusiso Dabi looked like to have fouled Marawaan Bantam, but after consulting with the linesman, referee Robert Sithole signalled for a corner.

That did not dampen the Students’ spirits and Roger de Sa’s charges surged forward in search of that important opener. Mark Haskins could only watch in disbelief when his header went over the bar with Aces keeper Thomas Ritcher at his mercy.

Wits were impressive in their forward forays in the second half, with Sifiso Myeni and Fabricio Rodrigues orchestrating the operations they found Aces’ defence led by Felix Mwamba Musasa uncompromising.

After a glut of missed opportunities earlier in the game, the deadlock was finally broken after Mulenga profited from a cross from the right and beat Wits’ keeper Darren Keet.

Wits tried hard to level matters and even the four minutes of referee’s optional time could not help.

Asoze saphela amandla! Zionists as a resident of Mpumalanga i found comfort in ur win yesternight as Pirates received a hiding from SSU. Many thougth Aces was weak after that 0-5 lashing to SSU, but now they concur with me that Aces were beaten by a quality side with a classy coach (Hunt). Viva Mazayizayi!

Eish, this lose was hard to swallow! I said yesterday that Aces are wounded lions and will come back forcefully and that they did.

Glad we gave points away to a team that really fought tooth and nail for it. All credit to Aces especially after the 5-0 drubbing against SSU.

This loss will allow my boys to re-group as they have forgotten what it feels like to lose a game, don't count the clever boys out or you will be damned if you do!
