Maritzburg and Cosmos draw

Posted: 21 October 2009 Time: 22:44

Neither Maritzburg United nor Jomo Cosmos were able to break five-game winless streaks in the Absa Premiership, playing to a 1-1 draw in their match at the Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Koena Mathopa handed Ezenkosi a surprise early lead but the Team of Choice hit back within the first half through Bryce Aka. There were no further goals.

Cosmos broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when Mathopa got on the end of a good pass from striker partner Sekou Camara and slid a low shot past Tashrique Goldman in the United goal.

Mathopa looked to add to his tally when presented with a shooting chance in the 32nd minute but he could only fire the ball straight at Goldman from 12-yards out.

There was nothing keeper Avril Phali could do to deny Aka from close-range in the 39th minute, with the Ivorian striker converting an incisive pass from Fadlu Davids to bring his side level at 1-1.

Early in the second half Davids had a couple of half chances to put Maritzburg into the lead, but it was Cosmos’ Camara who almost scored a goal soon after the break with a fierce drive that flashed just over the crossbar.

Noah Chivuta almost grabbed a late goal for the Team of Choice when he got on the end of a corner kick in the 87th minute, but the midfielder’s header went over the crossbar.

And in injury time Chivuta thought he had won the game with an effort that looked destined to ripple the back of the net, only for Phali to make yet another fine save and earn his side an away point.
