First home win for Urban Warriors

Posted: 18 October 2009 Time: 17:43

The departure of coach Muhsin Ertugral has coincided with Ajax Cape Town’s first home win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Newlands Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The goal was scored by Sifiso Vilakazi

The first save of the game came in the 11th minute as Ajax keeper Hans Vonk did well to get himself in position to save Tlou Segolela’s 18-yard effort.

Ajax had a couple of shots from range early on, but their first real opportunity came in the 18th minute when Lance Davids picked the ball up 30-yards from shot and sent a screamer of a shot towards the bottom corner of the net, but Phunya Sele Sele goal keeper Patrick Tignyemb was up to the task, making an agile diving save.

A minute later Sameehg Doutie delivered an outstanding ball into the cross from the right wing. The ball fell perfectly for Thulani Serero, but the youngster made a real mess of his header, missing the target by some distance from only eight yards out.

Celtic midfielder Prince Olomu should also have scored three minutes before the break when Thulani Hlatshwayo erred in defence, but his shot from right in front of goal was blazed over the bar.

Ajax stamped their authority on the match in the second half, but some well organised defence by Celtic saw the home side having to resort to long range efforts from the likes of Franklyn Cale and George Maluleka.

There was one exception early on as Derek Decamps headed just wide of goal in the 47th minute.

Ajax then had to wait until the 81st minute before they really threatened again as Mohammed Diallo looked set to score from inside the box, but had his effort deflected for a corner.

However, the Urban Warriors kept coming at Phunya Sele Sele and finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute when Cale whipped in a cross and Sifiso Vilakazi did the rest, putting an excellent header beyond the reach of Tignyemb.
