Santos pull one over Bucs

Santos ended Orlando Pirates’ unbeaten run in the 2009/10 Absa Premiership, with a 1-0 win at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

The People’s Team’s Erwin Isaacs scored the only goal of the game late in the first half, securing the visitors an impressive away win.

There was no goalmouth action to speak of in the first half hour of the game, as the two disciplined teams retained their shape and kept things tight at the back.

The players were frustrated by a lack of space in midfield and the rather poor state of the pitch – Orlando Stadium may be one of the country’s best football venues but it’s playing surface is certainly not conducive to the ‘beautiful game’ at present.

In the 32nd minute a defensive error from Santos saw Gert Schalkwyk send Thembinkosi Fanteni clean through on goal but the former Ajax Cape Town striker could only shoot straight at goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng.

On 37 minutes Santos created a great opportunity, with Phikolethu Spelman played in with a wonderful pass, but the striker pulled his shot wide with only Moeneeb Josephs to beat.

However, seven minutes later Spelman provided an inch-perfect cross to pick out an unmarked Isaacs in the penalty area – and the Santos forward finished with aplomb to put the Cape side 1-0 up heading into half time.

Teko Modise nearly brought the Buccaneers level within the first minute of the second half, forcing Motsoeneng into another great save with a well-struck shot direct from a free-kick.

Substitute Bennett Chenene, Fanteni and Lucas Thwala were all unable to hit the target for Pirates, and the Soweto side needed Josephs to make a fantastic save to deny Graham King from making it 2-0 late in the game.

another stupid comment by Rudi Krol saying international players were tired...de truth is you cannot rely on Teko n sum players. u have signed more than 30 players n those players can do de job. why play individual players when they are tired...that i called arrogant, inexperinced coach who doesnt knw what he's doing. Pirates wont go anywhere with dat attitudes, it has to change.

It's that time of the season when Pirates starts losing, and teams with substance, and not just quantity, starts winning and going up the log. SuperSport won by 5 goals today, peeping the sleepy bucs. I am a big fan, but have learnt to consider other sporting codes in case I lose interest in a team that's losing its historic grip.

I talked of fatigue the last time i was in this forum. If you are pirates supporter its better to make a copy of the table standing caz as always pirates wont occupy that spot for long, at least you will say u have been on top for once. The real champs won by 5, and what did the giant of soweto do, they could only salvage a drw from the pin point of Pitoli.

Pirates Played 10, scored 9, If you minus the Cosmos game then it's played 9 scored 5.
Chiefs Played 10 scored 11, If you minus the Ajax game the it's played 9 scored 8.

And then we complain why Bafana Bafana aren't scoring. We promote mediocrity, the so-called big teams are averaging less than 1 goal per game

Katlego Mashego is not a Pirates material. Next time he must come in even as a subtitute. Let us not give up mabhakaniya, even Chelsea lost and they in number 2. For a short time

Unfortunately for Pie-Rats this is when they start losing, while Chiefs and Sunflowers are finding their rhythm and unlike Pie-Rats they don't depend on Individual players.

Am I the only 1 noticed that our coach Ruud looked unhappy and unsettled today or is it just me, reminds me of what happened to all the coaches before him, I mean he couldn't even have a conversation with his technical team, there's certainly a smoke here...watch this space!
