Bidvest Wits beat Jomo Cosmos 3-1 at the Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Fabricio Rodrigues, Calvin Kadi and Marawaan Bantam scored for the Students, while Koena Mathopa countered for Ezenkosi.
The Students took early control of the game, and referee Matthew Dyer handed them a penalty in the 24th minute when Haskins was clumsily brought down in the box by Thabiso Hlalele. Wits’ Brazilian midfielder Rodrigues finished neatly from the penalty spot, sending Cosmos goalkeeper Avril Phali the wrong way.
Calvin Kadi, already on seven league goals for the season, should have scored BIDVest Wits’ second goal on the brink of half-time but his tame shot ended straight into the hands of Ezenkosi goalkeeper Phali.
Kadi had another chance the 59th minute, when Haskins drove in a great cross from the right wing. The 21-year-old put his head to the ball, but failed to hit the target from close range.
Referee Dyer opted not to give another penalty when Myeni was brought down in the Cosmos box, which didn’t please Wits coach Roger de Sa. But De Sa didn’t need to moan too much as Kadi got his eight goal of the season shortly after.
Cosmos made an attempt to come back into the game, and substitute Koena Mathopa put the ball past Wits keeper Chansa to make it 2-1 in the 80th minute.
But Bantam made sure of a Wits win in the 87th minute, scoring from a free-kick.
Wits move to the second on the log with 17 points from nine matches, while Cosmos look to have another relegation battle on their hands; sitting stone last in 16th with six points from nine games.
