Aces snatch late point

Mpumalanga Black Aces saved their best for last in their lively 1-1 draw with Free State Stars at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank on Wednesday night.

With the three points seemingly going the way of Stars, who were welcoming their new Brazilian coach Jose Georgini, their defence lost concentration and failed to clear a dangerous ball in the box, allowing Clifford Mulenga to beat goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene with an acrobatic volley in the 89th minute.

Stars, who are now sitting with eight points from as many games, have themselves to blame as they were the dominant side throughout the night and were let down by the defensive mistake.

In the 13th minute, Stars' Brazilian defender Fabio Costa’s close-range header went straight into the hands of Aces goalkeeper Oscar Ramogoadi.

Miscommunication between Ramogoadi and his captain Godfrey Nobula nearly gifted Stars a soft opening goal, but luckily the ball rolled out of play for a corner kick that was cleared off the line by veteran striker Gilbert Mushangazhike in the 29th minute.

Aces’ first notable attack came as a result of a good surging move that resulted in the effort of striker Madoda Motha going just wide of the upright.

Paulus Masehe unleashed a thunderous shot from inside the box that was punched away by Ramogoadi five minutes into the second half.

Aces launched attack of their own barely a minute later, but Mulenga wasted a glorious opportunity as he chose to side foot his shot while picking a spot seemed a better option to beat Mweene.

Stars were rewarded for their persistent attacks in the 73rd minute when Ramogoadi, who until this moment had given a good account of himself, fumbled Ruben Cloete's well-taken free-kick into the path of Sthembiso Ngcobo, who pounced from close range.

Chances followed from both sides as the game drew to a close, but it was Mulenga who had the last say at the death.
