Arrows, Santos ends in draw

Golden Arrows and Santos played to 1-1 draw at a rain drenched Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Ricardo Skippers scored an own-goal while Erwin Isaacs got the Santos qualiser.

Due to the slippery conditions, defending set pieces proved to be the greatest challenge for the teams and it came as no surprise that both the goals which came in the livelier second half were fashioned from set play.

As a result the first half was a dreary affair with goalmouth action limited to two attempts by home team from set pieces. In the 18th minute, Joseph Musonda got onto the end of a Richard Henyekane free-kick with a firm volley that hit the Santos upright. Tshepo Motsoeneng the Santos goalkeeper responded by grabbing the ball at the second attempt.

The complexion of the game changed soon after the restart when Santos conceded an own goal. Musonda hurled a long throw into the opposition’s penalty area which Motsoeneng failed to collect cleanly and as a result the ball rolled towards his goal line. Santos midfielder Ricardo Skippers tried to divert the ball to safety, but his erroneous clearance crashed into the goals.

As expected, Arrows looked to preserve their advantage and waited patiently for opportunities to launch telling counter attacking moves. From one such raid in the 62nd minute, wide midfielder Philani Shange wriggled his way past two Santos markers and unleashed a powerful drive from just outside the penalty area but Wayne Arendse blocked the attempt with a brave header.

Santos continued press for an equaliser and midway through the half, Arrows defender Siyabonga Sangweni headed Mogogi Gabonamong’s close range strike to safety, minutes later the visitors were back on level terms when a viciously struck free kick from Erwin Isaacs curled into the bottom corner of the Arrows goal to get the equalser.

In the 77th minute Santos’ Graham King fired a cracking drive from thirty meters out that didn’t miss by much. Henyekane went even closer five minutes later, he dispossessed Arendse in the Santos penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike which skimmed the crossbar.

In the closing minutes Curtis Dossantos powered a header on target from near the penalty spot, but Helton da Rocha was equal to the task.
