Vonk saves for Ajax win

AmaZulu’s winless home record in PSL matches continued when they were beaten 1-0 by a composed Ajax Cape Town at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night.
Dipsy Selolwane scored the Ajax goal. Late in the game Ajax keeper Hans Vonk saved a penalty taken by Marc van Heerden.
With both teams languishing at the bottom end of the league standings after five matches, a win was imperative for both camps. But it was AmaZulu’s inability to keep clean sheets especially in home matches that ultimately proved to be their undoing in this fixture.
They conceded a penalty in the 11th minute when their captain, Pere Ariweriyai, fouled George Maluleke in the area. Dipsy Selolwane made no mistake with the resulting penalty.
In spite of having the lion’s share of possession in the first half, the home side lacked the necessary cohesion to make serious inroads towards the Ajax goal area which was well marshalled by veteran goalkeeper Hans Vonk.
As expected, AmaZulu flew out of their blocks in the second stanza of play and kept their visitors pinned in their own half during the opening minutes. Notably, three minutes after the break, Ntokozo Sikhakhane’s drove a thunderous free kick that veered agonisingly off target for the home team, after deflecting off Ajax’s defensive wall.
Shortly thereafter the home supporters were on their feet when Ariweriyai wrapped his boot around a Sthembiso Dlamini corner but his effort crashed into the side netting.
AmaZulu virtually camped in the Ajax defence for the rest of the half, but just seemed to lack the necessary cutting edge to effect any changes on the scoreboard.
With nine minutes remaining, it seemed as if the home team’s fortunes had finally turned for the better when the referee Daniel Volgraaff pointed to the penalty spot. Ajax’s Latvian central defender Deniss Ivanovs handled the ball in his penalty area.
But Marc van Heerden had his spot kick blocked by the considerable figure of Vonk.
AmaZulu’s striker, Ayanda Dlamini should have spared van Heerden’s blushes when Vonk’s parry landed at his feet, instead he rocketed his effort over the crossbar.
