Free State Stars got their first win of the 2009/10 Absa Premiership season, beating Golden Arrows 3-1 at Goble Park on Wednesday afternoon.
After a goalless first half, two goals in three minutes from Aleni Lebyane and Professor Ramoraswi just after the break gave Stars the edge. Richard Henyekane pulled one back on the hour-mark, but Thamane Motaung’s strike 10 minutes from time sealed the result.
Stars were quick out of the blocks as Helton da Rocha was forced into two saves in the opening minutes. The Brazilian was again called into action on 30 minutes, tipping Ramoraswi’s effort around the post.
Sthembiso Ngcobo missed a free header from close range just before the break as the teams went in goalless, but it didn’t take long after the restart for the action to heat up.
Stars took the lead on 48 minutes when Lebyane got on the end of Makola’s pass and scored from close range. Three minutes later they made it 2-0 when Ramoraswi scored a terrific long-range goal that gave Da Rocha no chance.
Arrows responded by throwing on Richard Henyekane and the striker made an almost immediate impact, scoring from just inside the penalty area on 59 minutes to reduce the deficit.
However, Stars ensured they would pick up all three points when substitute Motaung got on the end of a good pass from Makola and beat Da Rocha with a low shot.
