Wits draw with Usuthu

AmaZulu and Bidvest Wits played to an entertaining 2-2 draw in their first Absa Premiership match of the season at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.

The Clever Boys’ Calvin Kadi grabbed two goals in a fine individual performance, while Usuthu showed great character and fight in their first League game under coach Neil Tovey, twice coming from behind to gain parity on the score sheet.

Wits got off to a cracking start, opening the scoring in the 11th minute. Kadi tucked home his first League goal of the season from close range after some good set up play by new signing Thando Mngomeni.

On 19 minutes the home team almost brought themselves level, with Bafo Biyela leeting fly with a long-range shot, but Darren Keet in the Wits’ goal made an excellent save.

By this stage Usuthu were growing in confidence and they duly brought themselves level in the 39th minute, with Biyela converting a penalty conceded after a hand-ball inside Wits’ 18-yard area.

However, the KwaZulu-Natal team fell behind for a second time just a few minutes later. Kadi got on the end of Sifiso Myeni’s cross and put the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

The former SuperSport United striker’s brace left the score 2-1 in favour of the Johannesburg visitors heading into half-time.

On the hour mark Wits should have put themselves 3-1 up when Mark Haskins’ cross found its way to the feet of Myeni in the penalty area, but the young midfielder couldn’t get his shot on target.

AmaZulu took full advantage of Myeni’s miss to drag themselves back on level terms for the second time. Captain Pere Ariweriyai scored from close range to make it 2-2 in the 66th minute.

Both teams created scoring opportunities in the remainder of the game but were unable to capitalise and find what probably would have proved a winning third goal. Nonetheless, both teams will be satisfied with having got themselves off to an unbeaten start in the Absa Premiership.
