Cosmos back with another draw

Draw specialists Jomo Cosmos celebrated their return to the Absa Premiership with a predictable goalless draw against Platinum Stars at the Rand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The home side were perhaps a little unfortunate not to pick up all three points as they had several efforts cleared off the line, while Stars goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands also made some very good saves.
Cosmos were by far the more attack-minded side in the opening stanza and could well have been in front if they had made better use of their opportunities.
A mistake by Sandilands in the second minute resulted in a corner for Ezenkosi, which led to Thapelo Tshilo’s header being cleared off the line.
Swaziland striker Siza Dlamini had a couple of good chances for the home side, but was unable to beat Sandilands with an angled shot from 14 yards out, and then went well wide of the target with a shot from a tight angle two minutes later.
Ezenkosi’s best player of the opening half was Bongani Theletsane, who was all over the park and lit up the game with some outstanding touches. At the back, the likes of Tshilo, Asansda Mvalo and goalkeeper Avril Phali were always in control and Stars barely got a look in at goal.
Phali was solid in the air when crosses were played into the box and had no problems in keeping out Luis Renteria’s 32nd-minute volley.
Steve Komphela’s men had a good period of possession near the end of the half, but failed to penetrate a well-organised Cosmos defence.
Cosmos started the second half brightly, but it was Stars who had the first clear-cut scoring chance when Edward Williams went on a fine run before playing Alton Meiring into the box. Meiring, however, wasted the opportunity with a poor shot that went into the side-netting.
Jomo Sono threw caution to the wind with two changes in quick succession midway through the second half, which included bringing on striker Tshepo Moloto for centre-back Mvalo.
In the 75th minute Tshilo came ever so close to scoring when his header from a Bamuza Sono cross struck a defender with Sandilands beaten.
Stars’ best chances came from free-kicks, with Meiring and Dillon Sheppard both coming close. At the other end of the field, Sandilands make an excellent save to keep out Lucky Mhlathe.
The visitors were then reduced to 10 men late on when Oscar Ntwagae was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.
