Supersport clinch first-ever title

Posted: 18 May 2008 Time: 16:55

Supersport United have clinched a first-ever Absa Premiership title on an epic final day of the 2007/08 season, despite losing 2-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic at the Seisa Ramabodu stadium on Sunday.

Gavin Hunt’s side were outplayed by an excellent Celtic team, but will still be celebrating tonight as Ajax Cape Town, needing a win to overhaul Supersport, dramatically drew 2-2 with Golden Arrows in Durban, scoring two late goals to come from 2-0 down.

Moses Spandeel scored twice for Celtic, while Fikru Tefera netted for Supersport.

It was a nervous-looking Supersport in the opening few minutes, but by contrast, Celtic, free of pressure, were knocking the ball around nicely.

Hunt said after the game that it was the worst he had seen his side play in the opening 45 minutes, but they were still unlucky to go behind.

Spandeel beat the offside trap on 19 minutes and rounded Andre Arendse in the Matsatsantsa goal. His shot from 17-yards came back off the crossbar and bounced down, but appeared to be cleared.

However, the linesman ruled the ball had crossed the line, when replays clearly showed it had not.

That added more pressure on the visitors, who were almost rocked again when Arendse misjudged a backpass from Shane Poggenpoel, allowing it to bounce over his head, and had to rush back into his goal to clear off the line.

But it was 2-0 just before halftime as Petrus Mahlatsi teed-up the excellent Spandeel, who side-footed home from the edge of the area.

By his own admission, Hunt read his side the riot act at halftime, and Tefera went up bravely to head home on the hour-mark and pull his side back within one goal.

They couldn’t find a second, however, and had to wait anxiously on the result from Durban before they could start celebrating as the champions of South Africa for the 2007/08 season.

There are still big teams in this top flight football. I was a bit pertubed to see only SSU players and stuff celebrating at the stadium. Should they not have brought their kids to the stadium, it would be 'Players only' party. Celtic supporters were celebrating their victory, nothing else. It would be a disgrace if they were to play their final match away to Cosmos.

Congratulations Supersport United for being the 'lucky' winners of the PSL championship crown this season.
I urge the SSU management not to rest on fake laurels but to go all out and beef up their squad, arm themselves with players of a higher quality and even strengthen their technical staff.
A team that cannot go out there and force such an important prequiste result is termed as ordinary.
And, such an ordinary team will not take you anywhere when you represent this country in Africa next up and soon.
The truth is that SSU emerged as the one eyed man among the blind. But, they cannot be denied their 1st League title.
Do what is right and more glory will follow.
As for Ajax, I told them to wait for no less than another 4years. Am I the soccer prophet or what?
Mark my words.
