Sundowns missed out on a top-three League finish as they went down 4-0 to Free State Stars on Sunday afternoon.
Stars’ goals were scored by Kingston Nkatha, who bagged a brace, Diyo Sibisi and Sipho Nkosi.
Nkatha’s brace were the first goals he has scored in the PSL since arriving from Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwean striker opened the scoring for Stars in the third minute, capitalising on a defensive error to shoot past Jackson Mabokgwane and then scored a second in similar fashion in the 17th minute to take the score to 2-0.
Diyo Sibisi scored the third for Stars in the 32nd minute, taking his personal tally to 13 – one short of top-scoring James Chamanga and two short of the limit Absa set on a cash prize.
Sibisi beat Downs’ off-side trap and drew Mabokgwane out of his goal before tapping home.
Nkosi closed the scoring in the 57 minute, heading home after a corner from Ruben Cloete.
Sundowns had a disappointing game, showed little commitment and barely had a shot on goal. One can only hope they show a little more heart in the Nedbank Cup final next weekend.
Free State Stars, on the other hand, showed a great fighting spirit, and with the win they finish fifth on the log.
