Matsatsantsa extend championship lead

Posted: 12 April 2008 Time: 22:37

Supersport United beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 and, as a result, extended their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership log to four points ahead of Ajax Cape Town.

It was not a great match from a technical point of view, but it was full of tension. The match was interrupted in the second half due to a problem with the floodlights at the Johannesburg Stadium.

The Buccaneers are now in sixth position on the log. However, they have only won one of their last six league encounters, which will put pressure on their coach Owen da Gama.

Matsatsantsa keeper Denis Onyango was back from suspension, but coach Gavin Hunt opted to continue with the experienced Andre Arendse between the posts. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, had Teko Modise back from suspension.

Supersport started the game in a blitz, scoring in the second minute thanks to a goal by Elias Pelembe, after a good cross from the left by the always hard-working Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra. The Pirates defence was clearly caught napping.

Five minutes later, Katlego Mashego nearly scored the second goal via a well-timed left-footed bicycle kick. The ball, however, went just wide.

The Buccaneers tried to come back, but did not create any real chances. Their only opportunity to score came when Matsatsantsa defender Bongani Khumalo looked to head the ball away out of the box, before suddenly leaving the ball for Arendse behind him, who did not expect it. But the veteran goalkeeper reacted alertly, catching the ball in the second instance.

Both teams had a habit of losing possession of the ball too often, with Pirates midfielder Modise being one of the main culprits.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, Pirates striker Gilbert Mushangazhike got an excellent chance to equalize, but his shot went wide.

The Buccaneers started to dominate the midfield, while the Matsatsantsa defence fell back too easily and too quickly. Supersport still missed their influential captain Ricardo Katza in defence, but they were lucky to have a cool-head in Arendse, who organised his defence well.

Pirates coach Da Gama attempted to change the game by replacing defensive midfielder Lindokuhlu Mkhwanazi with the more attack-minded Lebohang Mokoena.

A well-taken free kick by Modise from about 25 metres was well saved by Arendse.

However, the game was interrupted halfway through the second half due to a problem with the floodlights at the Johannesburg Stadium. The break to sort out the malfunctioning lights took about 40 minutes, which, of course, did not make life easy for the players, who had to warm-up again.

Just after the extended stoppage Supersport's Daine Klate got a free header in front of the Pirates goal, but he got the header completely wrong, sending the ball far wide – a poor miss.

Thereafter, the game went up and down with both teams getting opportunities to score.

After the game, Supersport coach Gavin Hunt commented, "Last week we were poor, losing against AmaZulu. But tonight we did well and we deserved the win!"

Op what is happening? Even this season they will be crying. I hope next season, the PSL would have PIRATES CUP maybe they will win because the cup would be made for them compiting with vodacom teams. It is known now that Pie-rat are not PLs material.HOW can so called BIG Team goes without a cup for seasons. Or PSL must introduce a price for "the oldest team without a cup in two seasons"

That was the most pathetic perfomance by pirates since the days of Mutombo, Da Gama and Teko are losing the plot big time. Being the main man at Pirates has gone to Modise's head and he has become greedy and selfish. as for Da Gama's tactics, they leave a lot to be desired.

Only now I understand why Dr Khoza never did like local coaches, ODG has run out of ideas, the kind of soccer being played by Pirates does not even compare to bundus, as I would rather watch, that kind of soccer in the bundu areas since there you will find pride and commitment, but then I blame the coach in all the past seven games he has not won has been pathetic, where in this day and age would the coach praise his charges for failing to win the game and say he is proud of his charges for having displayed good 10 minutes'against santos? his selection of the team is pathetic, prefering development players when there are good players whio needs to be given a chance? I am talking about Shakira? 'Tsepiso Tshabalala, is very slow he must have seen that in the game against TRZ where I flew to Durban to watch them, he was pathetic and does not deserve Bucs shirt, Mkhwanazi is a good prospect but he is not offensive at all, good passes but is stationary. he can only be introduced in the last 20 minutes, Mshangazike is pathetic import, he was brought to score goals not to miss like that, why change Masihe,Walaza combination? why play three defenders in wrong positions and expect to win against a fast team like supersport? I am being truthful when I say I miss Papic under him it was fast entertaining soccer and winning too, ODG is pathetic and I do not see him staying for long at Pirates, what I hate about him he makes excuses all the time, It is hard to be a Pirates thes days in fact I do not know when last I was confident about them winning

Why is ODG not pressing to have assistant? now I know he is being assisted by Palacious who has his agenda of playing all of his development players, you will always see ODG answering his cell phone before substitution, in allmost all the games I ahve watched, this is rediculous for a coach to do that, he did see Pirates could not even put three passes together but still kept the same team, Tshabalala, Mkhwanazi,Merahe, and Chenene were off form but he kept them so long, what have Makhanya, Mokoena, and Shakira done not to be given startwhen the above Mamparas are not playing well, ODG has lost all cup games, now league games? his time has come end of the season he needs to call it quits, he has failed together with his assistant Palacious, may be they should both resign, enough is enough, am sick and tired of this!!!!
