Platinum Stars book important win

Posted: 16 April 2008 Time: 21:58

Platinum Stars beat BidVest Wits 2-1 in a tight game with little to no chances for both sides.

Thanks to the win, the Tycoons move up to the 10th position, one place above Kaizer Chiefs. The Students drop to sixth position.

Wits caught the Tycoons still napping when a first minute corner on the left, taken by Richard Rantjie, was headed in by striker Marcos de Jesus, 1-0. Stars coach Miguel Gamondi was livid; for obvious reason as his side had not yet awoken.

After Stars recovered from this early setback, they were actually slightly the better side, while Wits counter-attacked with venom.

It was not a nasty match, but there were some nasty tackles. For example, Phumudzo Manenzhe had to leave the pitch already in the 35th minute, due to an injury picked up after a harsh tackle by Wits midfielder Noah Chivuta.

Earlier in the match, the Stars striker had tackled Wits left-back Almiro Lobo badly, which resulted in a yellow card by referee Jonas Nhlapo. Manenzhe was replaced by Simba Marumo. The Tycoons dominated the last part of the first half, but it did not result in any real chances.

Stars started the second half like they had ended the first; having more possession. However, this time it resulted as well in a goal when Tsepho Ramokala received the ball just outside the Wits box, made some moves and, accordingly, shot the ball in the right corner from a slightly left-angle, leaving keeper Moeneeb Josephs no chance.

Hereafter the game flowed up and down, from box to box with none of the teams creating any real chances. The battle was mostly fought in the central midfield and especially some early pressure by Stars, from the moment Wits got close to their half, cared that the Students never really got into their rhythm.

No team ever looked like scoring a second goal until, again, Ramokala, in a similar situation as his first goal, scored his second of the evening.

That was the moment Wits really started to attack, trying to score the equalizer, but it was too late.

Stars book an important win, as they struggled to gain three points in recent matches. The Tycoons next host Moroka Swallows on Monday evening, ahead of their important MTN African Champions League third round, first leg clash against the Egyptian champions Al Ahly.

Wits will travel to Thohoyandou to face Black Leopards next Saturday.

Teams: BidVest Wits (4-4-2): Josephs; Shendzelani, A. Hendricks, Gariseb, Lobo; Rantjie, Tipa, Chivuta (Mokoena 82'), Senokoane; Moyo (Sibande 64'), De Jesus (Studzinski 66')

Platinum Stars (4-4-2): Sandilands; Khaile, Tshabalala, Mofokeng, Mkalipa; Zwane (Monareng 46'), Kgatla, Williams (Mmotong 61'), Ramokala; Manenzhe (Marumo 35'), Renteria

I totally agree with Mokhele! He got all the potential players in his team but the tactics he uses is in the olden days. kick and charge soccer. Defenders get the ball play to the "main striker" and he cannot even keep the ball up. Can the bosses at Wits not see this or maybe they don't want to see it. De Jesus was a brilliant player when he got at Wits. Look at him now the same goes for Ashraf HEndricks and Moeneeb Josephs. He is kiiling there charges for Bafana with is tactics he got. PLEASE DE SAI CHANGES YOUR TACTICS BEFORE IT IS 2 LATE. I don't even watch the games anymore. It is really pathetic soccer!

Hey Tivani - you are not a soccer critic - you are just critical! This is not a pie-rats forum. This is a soccer forum. When your team does something interesting you will read about it here, when they do something stupid, you will read about it here. Rather ask yourself what is going wrong at pie-rats this season Mshana...

But, theo ODG won't survive there. When he was at stars, he was a crying baby-shortage of money now and then, at PRTS there is money, produce good results Owen don't turn against players now.
