Sundowns trounce Leopards

Posted: 19 March 2008 Time: 17:49

Mamelodi Sundowns trounced Black Leopards 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash in Thohoyandou on Wednesday afternoon.

Fanyana Dhladhla, Lerato Chabangu and Surprise Moriri scored for the Brazilians in a very one-sided match.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the offset with midfielders Godfrey Sapula and Esrom Nyandoro going close in the fourth and fifth minutes respectively.

Lerato Chabangu should have put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute when he latched onto a good cross by Sapula, but the striker’s header flew straight at Lidoda Duvha keeper Mashudu Mamphitha.

Leopards’ Mulondo Sikhwivhilu also wasted a good chance to break the deadlock in the 29th minute when he sent his close range header over Calvin Marlin’s crossbar.

The hosts almost scored a minute later after they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Sundowns area following Nyandoro’s foul on Robert N’gambi, but Christopher Netshidzivhe’s free-kick came back off the crossbar.

Sundowns were forced into their first substitution of the game in the 33rd minute when skipper Michael Manzini was replaced by Mbulelo Mabizela after sustaining an injury.

The match remained goalless at the break.

Sundowns continued their dominance in the second half and the introduction of Vuyo Mere and Bryan Aldave really sparked the match to life.

Dhladhla opened the scoring in the 69th minute when he headed home from a flick by Aldave following Mere’s long throw-in.

Chabangu made it 2-0 eight minutes later when he beat the offside trap to run onto a pass by Moriri before coolly slotting the ball home.

Moriri rounded off the scoring two minutes before the end when he received a pass from Nyandoro before hitting the back of the net from the edge of the area.

Sundowns deserved to win the game and if Austin Eguavoen is to save Leopards from relegation this season, he should not adopt the defensive approach he used against Sundowns.

It is now curtains to Leorpards. They must sell some of their top players now or they will loose them for free come end of season. I think it will be good riddance if Leorpards are relegated. They are not a very professional set up.

What a start by the new coach, fire him straight away. Why does he play 5-4-1 ? With 4 creative midfielders, the one thing undoing leopards is their lack of depth. The only way to get 21 remaining points is to enlist top sport psychologist and play 2-4-4 pattern.

Dnt be too much excited Downs fans. Leopard is already dead so watch out for disappointment because u might even forget that u won against Leopard after losing against Chiefs. Even my home team can beat Leopard at the moment so relax and be prepared. Advise to Leopard players: Negotiate with other teams majimbos otherwise u will be walking on the street next season without contracts

Chiefs prefer to play the on form teams and rather be underdogs in order to deliver what they do best. This is cup competition we talking about so there is no mercy whent it comes to money. Congratulations though for winning the game but to me its finishing off the already dead lion. The match I'm talking about will be the test of character for the players, can't wait to see those madalas chasing their shodows cause they gonna run 90 minutes non stop even more if they decided to defend in order to catch Chiefs on counter attack!

Well done Masandawana for wining this one.

We can go back and forth on who is going to win in the last 16 games on the Nedbank Cup, but the fact remains, the team that wants it the most, more organised in all departments, shows more enthusiasm, determination and more commitment will walk away victorious, and I pray that it is my team ( SUNDOWNS )
