Pirates, Arrows share points

Posted: 1 March 2008 Time: 21:56

Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday evening.

A combination of fine goalkeeping and some sub-standard finishing saw the points shared between the two attack-minded teams.

Pirates' Gilbert Mushangazhike had the first chance of the match in the 11th minute thanks to the vision of Teko Modise, but the Zimbabwean's angled shot flashed wide of the Arrows goal.

Abafana Bes'thende came within inches of taking the lead in the 28th minute when a superb passing move sent Papi Zothwane clean through, but keeper Senzo Meyiwa got a hand on the midfielder's goal-bound shot to deflect it over the crossbar.

Less than a minute later Pirates looked for a reply in kind but Bennett Chenene's low shot was easily gathered up by Nkosana Maseko.

The two teams' play had been rather easy on the eye, but they still went into halftime with the score line blank.

Modise went close early in the second half with a free-kick that sizzled past Maseko's left-hand upright, and less than a minute later he sent a low drive narrowly wide of the opposite post.

Arrows went close in the 55th minute when Abia Nale headed over the crossbar and a short while later Pequenino worked some space for a shot but failed to trouble Meyiwa.

Substitute Philani Shange then butchered a great scoring chance in the 64th minute, when he found himself with time and space just inside the penalty area only to miss his kick.

Pirates almost created the opener in the 75th minute when a header back across goal almost fell kindly for Lebohang Mokoena, but the young forward was unable to get a clean strike away.

Ten minutes later Modise brought out a good save from Maseko with a well-hit free-kick, but the best chances of the game fell to Mushangazhike and Paulos Masehe in the opening seconds of injury time.

First the veteran striker shot on the turn after Arrows failed to clear a corner kick but Maseko came up with a brilliant save, before Masehe put the rebound wide with the net gaping in front of him.

It's easy to contain BUCS,just make sure Teko Modise does not play and close Bennet Chenene then your job is almost done. There will be little supply to the strikers and therefore less goal scoring chances..It now poses a challenge on Owen Da gama..

I haven't suprised about the outcome of the game. This boys are hot, playing exciting good football and enjoy every second with my eyes when they on the field. They are always coached by SA coaches who always allow them to express themselves with skills on the field play.Abafana besithende don't recruit rejected players from Gauteng like Blackleopard,Amazulu,Thanda Zulu Royal etc. They utilised their youth development effectively and also recruiting amateur players in the process.Back to Bucs' game they have Maseko (from Celtics),Bilankulu (DRC),Musondo (Zam) and Pequenino (Moz)the rest from development & amateurs. The team like Sundowns should focus on the youth like (Arrows,Bucs & Ajax) bcoz they have money to build ACADEMY and stop buying rejects from South America.

Both sides played well containing each other, not giving each other a chance to shoot, its one of those games where no team deserved a win!!

when i talk about total South African football i mean this two teams including Celtcs. It was so marvelous to watch this game.I like the aproaching of the play, they always play attacking brand of football. Thanks to this two giants of coaches. The other thing that i apreciate from Golden Arrows coach is that it doesn't matter playing at home or away you must go for three points,That is the attitute that i like and i want all the PSL coaches to intill in the minds of all the players in the League. It doen't help to go for the kill when playing at home and play cautious defencive football when playing away in the name of IF ONLY I CAN GET AWY WITH ONE POINT I WILL BE HAPPY WHICH IS NONSENCE.Thanks bucs and Arrows.

I know I might differ from many people here on my analysis of this game. 1) Though I'm not an expect one cud see from the 1st 15 minutes that both teams were actually playing with similar stratey. As a result they cancelled each other out but to my suprise Pirates coach didn't come up with plan B since it was Pirates' home game. With only 1 clear cut chance from each team in the 1st 45min I find it hard that some people proclaim that this was a gud game. IMO there were just too many technical and tactical mistakes from both teams. Both teams have the ability to play gud carpet football, but to my annoyance after 4 complated passes someone always go for long ball. Only one winger was working(though ineffective) Nale, Modise always takes unnecesary long shots, Zothwane had gud 1st half that's it, Masehe provided gud movement forward but missed a sitter in the last minute, poor ball protection/retention from both teams, slow ball release (Modise),passing, poor distribution (Meyiwa),lack of innovation/creativity and POOR PITCH.Generally I wasn't that impressed with the standard of that game, infact STANDARD OF OUR PSL IN GENERAL.I still think Pirates was better during Papic.BTW what is exactly happening to Kamwendo. is he still injured or just out of favour??????

I dnt remembr seeing Masehe scoring a goal, evn while still at Sundowns.Wht kind of a striker is this one? The duty of a striker s to score goals bt Masehe cnt evn score sitters inside 6 yards whn goalkeepers are lost. This guy wl cost Da Gama the job.
