Stars triumph over Celtic

Posted: 20 February 2008 Time: 18:01

Free State Stars continued their remarkable return to the top flight with a 1-0 victory over local rivals Bloemfontein Celtic in an Absa Premiership match on Wednesday afternoon.

Diyo Sibisi netted his ninth league goal to hand Ea Lla Koto the bragging rights in the Free State derby. The burly striker scored with a well-taken header from Thulasizwe Mbuyane's left wing cross in the 43rd minute.

Stars dominated proceedings after the break but found Celtic goalkeeper Postnett Omony a difficult man to beat, as the Ugandan denied Sibisi and strike partner Sthembiso Ngcobo on numerous occasions to give his side hope of pulling game out of the fire.

And they so nearly did so in injury time at the end of the game but Lebohang Kukame saw his header rebound back off the crossbar, handing Stars all three points.

Ea Lla Koto move up to second place on 30 points, although Orlando Pirates, BidVest Wits and Supersport United will all have the chance to leapfrog them later on Wednesday in their matches against Mamelodi Sundowns, Jomo Cosmos and Kaizer Chiefs respectively.

Celtic remain in mid-table on 22 points.
