Serge Djiehoua scored the only goal of the game to hand Thanda Royal Zulu FC a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Olympia Park Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Ironically, Djiehoua is on loan at Thanda Royal Zulu FC from Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi made most of the early running and should have gone ahead in the 13th minute when Thuso Phala ran onto a long ball, but the former Silver Stars winger was harshly adjudged to have strayed into an offside position.
Barnard Parker created Thanda Royal Zulu FC’s first real chance in the 21st minute when he tested Itumeleng Khune with a long range effort, but the Chiefs keeper produced a superb save to tip the ball around the post for a corner.
Mandla Masango almost handed the hosts the lead in the 35th minute when he rose highest to latch onto a Siphiwe Tshabalala cross, but his header flew just wide of the upright.
The match remained goalless at the break.
Kaizer Chiefs started the second stanza well and went close in the 55th minute when Thuso Phala ran onto a long ball before beating his marker, but his effort from an acute angle, crashed off the crossbar.
Thanda Royal Zulu FC took the lead two minutes later when Bongani Mbhele played Djiehoua clear on goal and the striker made no mistake.
Djiehoua almost made it 2-0 in the 65th minute when he ran onto another good pass by Mbhele, but Khune produced a good save to deny the Ivorian.
Chiefs almost drew level in the 74th minute when David Obua sent his header crashing onto the crossbar from a good cross by Onismor Bhasera.
Substitute Kaizer Motaung Jnr was unlucky not to have hit the back of the net in the 86th minute when he latched onto a loose ball inside the Thanda area following their failure to clear a Chiefs corner, and the striker saw his goalbound shot deflect just past the upright off Bennett Mnguni, and with that went the final chance of the game.
