Dominant Bafana beat All Whites

Bafana Bafana have put in a dominant performance as they outplayed New Zealand 2-0 in the 2009 Confederations Cup Group A encounter at the Royal Bafokeng Sports in Rustenburg on Wednesday night.

The South Africans could have gotten close to double-figures as they played some sparkling carpet football, but in the end had to be content with just a brace from Bernard Parker in what was an excellent chance to boost their goal-difference.

Terror Fanteni should have done better with an early chance when he was set-up by Teko Modise, but his ‘fresh air’ shot was cleared by the defence, while Modise tried his luck from all of 35-yards, but his effort was wide.

It was a bright beginning from Bafana and they were certainly doing all the running; Fanteni forcing New Zealand goalkeeper Glen Moss into work with a header after a good cross from Tsepo Masilela.

Fanteni had the ball in the back of the net on 10 minutes, but was adjudged offside, with replays suggesting he was perhaps just on, while Steven Pienaar fired straight at Moss from the edge of the box.

But the goal finally did come on 21 minutes and it was through Bafana’s most potent attacker, Parker. Pienaar fed Masilela on the left and the fullback did brilliantly to get the byline before crossing low for Parker, who put the ball in the back of the net, despite the strong hand of Moss.

Parker almost had a second with a brilliant run and shot that was saved by Moss with an outstretched foot, while Aaron Mokoena headed over from an angled free-kick as the home side finished the half strongly in search of a second.

Modise had the first shot of the second half as he linked well with Pienaar on the edge of the area before firing high and wide, and then repeated the dose a few minutes later.

But Parker did make it 2-0 on 52 minutes and again the supply came from the excellent Masilela, who crossed hard and low and the Red Star Belgrade man turned the ball home with his knee.

Bafana were finding space all over the park now and Modise almost got Parker in for his third, while shortly afterwards a sublime pass from Pienaar found Modise in space, but he shot wide.

Just before, the perennially offside Fanteni was replaced with Katlego Mashego, who was adjudged offside when clean through, but again replays showed he was at least half-a-yard on. Mashego then had the ball in the back of the net from a Pienaar pass, but this time he definitely was offside.

Mashego then had two chances inside a minute which he should have buried - the first a one-on-one with the goalkeeper; the second when he was brilliantly set-up just outside the six-yard box by substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Mashego then had an even better chance when he was put free six yards from goal, but with just the goalkeeper to beat, allowed Moss to save.

ADVANTAGE IRAQI.BAFANA ARE OUT!

You are only 2-0 up and what do our players do? They act like clowns in the circus. New Zealand are a Mvela league team, Iraqi are laughing at us because they know they will score more than 2 goals against this team. Iraqi 1-0 defeat against Spain is a good result for them. Bafana are going to have to work really hard for a similar result. I am so disappoint with our players professionalism. They think of themselves 1st before their team and country.

BAFANA NEEDS TO GROW-UP FAST!

What is the point of congratulating Bafana if the job was not done. The job was to score at least 3 or 4 goals against New Zealand. Iraqi is now in the driving seat to qualify to the next round. If Bafana doesnt qualify then what will you say? If Bafana played New Zealand 100 times in a row. Bafana will win 100 times. Its that simple, because New Zealand are that bad. Its like Chiefs playing a Vodacom League team.

Bafana needs to get to the 2nd round. This performance did not help at all. Once against Bafana will dropout in the 1st round. Its embarrassing. Now people are saying a draw against Spain is possible, WHAT PLANET ARE WE LIVING IN PEOPLE!

I just wanna say well done bafana bafana all the way from Botswana. we are behind you here not just because we are neighbours but i love the way your soccer is going these days,
HOWEVER, i think something has got to be done about Katlego Mashego. i dont agree with Goya la mukumbani : 2009-06-17 22:28 [ Report ] though cos the guy has got great potential. its only that he is not an intelligent player.
how can you miss chances like that and be caught off side 6times in 5 minutes?!!!
you are a great player and nobody should take anything away from you, but you ned to read the game a bit better and work on your finishing. what you did these two games is "Criminal"
