Laffor hat-trick sinks Maritzburg

SuperSport United stretched their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership to three points after an emphatic 5-0 win over Martizburg United.

With nearest rivals – Bidvest Wits – losing to Mamelodi Sundowns, United have a three-point cushion going into their weekend fixture against Ajax Cape Town on Saturday night.

The defending champions looked in ominous form in dispatching Maritzburg, who were fourth placed in the league going into the game at the Super Stadium, and it would take brave person to bet against Gavin Hunt's team defending their title.

Anthony Laffor was the hero of the night netting a hat-trick to leapfrog into second place on the Absa Premiership leading goal scoring table behind Bernard Parker. But while it was the Liberian who was finding the back of net, Katlego Mashego was the key person in setting up the chances.

The livewire forward proved the catalyst for the opening goal, when he broke down the Maritzburg flank before delivery an inch-perfect cross which Masibusane Zongo converted. It was just reward for the home team who had kept the visitors on the back foot from the first whistle.

Gordon Igesund would have been confident of causing an upset going into the match on the back of good form, but could do nothing to stir his players to action in the face of the United onslaught. They did manage to hold out for a further 20 minutes before Laffor opened his account in the 42nd minute.

Two minutes in the second period Ricardo Katza stretched the lead, when he met Mashego's free kick.

Igesund made a double substitution to try and reverse their fortunes bringing on John Arawuh and Collen Zimba but they had little impact as SuperSort continued to dominate and Laffor netted in his second in the 78th minute after good work from Pelembe.

The lanky striker completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute with a well-taken goal to seal the three points for a team seemingly intent on keeping hold of the Absa Premiership title they won for the first time last season.
