Defeat to defending champions Esperance temporarily halted Bucs mission of a last eight berth, with the already eliminated Platinum are out for nothing but pride.
Fresh from back-to-back domestic wins, Pirates made three changes from the midweek draw against Bloemfontein Celtic in Marcelo Da Silva, Xola Mlambo and Luvuyo Memela.
Bucs looked to suffer an early set-back when Da Silva conceded a penalty following a handball. Wayne Sandilands though dived to the right to deny Never Tigere.
Tigere atoned for the miss when his long-range shot wrong-footed Sandilands after deflecting off Alfred Ndengane for their first group stage goal on 22 minutes.
Good build-up play from Pirates nearly led to a response, but Kudakwashe Mahachi shot wide from the edge of the box.
Platinum added more woes to the Buccaneers course when Rainsome Pavari rolled the ball into an empty net after slapdash defending in the 37th minute, bringing the half to an end with the visiting team leading 2-0.
With nothing to lose Pirates threw the kitchen sink in attack by removing defender Da Silva for striker Augustine Mulenga two minutes after halftime.
Justin Shonga’s free-kick from outside the area finally reduced Petros Mhari into action, who palmed the effort for a corner ten minutes into the second stanza.
From a tight angle, Thembinkosi Lorch blasted into the side-netting after drifting past a challenge on 59 minutes.
With desperation creeping in, Shonga threatened with a point-blank header which goalkeeper Mhari steered away minutes later.
Bucs finally sliced the deficit in half when Lorch controlled Memela’s pass to finish from the right side of the area on 81 minutes, 2-1.
Pirates completed the come back when Mulenga side-footed home a loose ball from the far side in the final five minutes after a well-worked set-piece, 2-2.
Platinum were reduced to ten-man when Kelvin Moyo saw red for bringing down Thamsanqa Gabuza a minute into time added on.
Mahachi then missed a sitter from close-range when he shot tamely at Mhari following a square ball, as Bucs shift focus to AC Horoya.
The Bucs are now third in Group B and need a win in their last game to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
