Mamelodi Sundowns secured their first win in Group A after edging Wydad Casablanca 2-1 in the CAF Champions League on Saturday night at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The Brazilians came into the game with their backs against the wall after losing their group opener against Lobi Stars last weekend.
Coach Pitso Mosimane welcomed back key players, goalkeeper Denis Onyango, and Themba Zwane in the line-up after missing the defeat against Lobi Stars.
Zwane opened the scoring for Masandawana in the eighth minute with a clinical half-volley that goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti was unable to keep out.
Most of the chances fell for the hosts as Mosa Lebusa almost made it 2-0 for Mosimane’s charges on the half-hour mark with a powerful header that was acrobatically parried over the bar by Tagnaouti.
Wydad’s Mohamed Nahiri punished the Brazilians ten minutes before halftime with a scorching strike from outside the box that beat Onyango underneath the top corner of the bar, 1-1.
Thapelo Morena should have put Sundowns ahead ten minutes into the second stanza after going through on goal, but he somehow struck his effort over the bar at close range, while he had teammates in a better position.
Zwane eventually restored the lead for the hosts in the 65th minute with a powerful volley from just outside the box that beat Tagnaouti.
The visitors further refreshed their attacking line in the final 15 minutes, as forward Badi Aouk came on for fellow striker William Jebor, while Mosimane made his first change nine minutes before time with Lyle Lakay replacing Anthony Laffor.
The hosts made sure to close up shop with introduction of Motjeka Madisha for Gaston Sirino, as Wydad found it tough to carve out another opening.
Nevertheless, Sundowns hung to claim three points to move second in the group behind leaders Wydad, who boast a superior goal difference.
