CAF Champions League match report African Stars v Orlando Pirates 22 December 2018

Posted: 22 December 2018 Time: 13:03

Orlando Pirates recorded a 1-0 win over Namibia’s African Stars to secure a spot in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Pirates were quickly on the attack after a corner from Augustine Mulenga allowed him to power down the flank to play in a low cross, but the danger was averted.

Stars were under attack as a corner for Bucs found its way to Vincent Pule who returned possession to Shonga to load in a cross for Innocent Maela, but his header was mistimed.

Bucs were then forced to defend after Stars managed to pick up openings inside their defensive lines, but strong defending from Marshall Munetsi kept them on course.

With the game approaching the half hour mark, the rain began to fall down and made playing conditions tough for both sides.

It appeared as if Bucs had gone in front through the boot of Munetsi, but the goal was sadly disallowed for offside.

Closer to halftime, Stars posed a few worrying situations on the counterattack after the visitors were caught out in possession but strong defending ensured safety in the end.

The efforts of Bucs were rewarded shortly after the break when Pule connected with Thembinkosi Lorch to create an opening. This brought Shonga into play, with the Zambian scrambling the ball over the line in the 57th minute.

After a low-key half-and-hour spell, the notable opening fell to Lorch with just the goalkeeper to beat, but he powered his effort too high over the post.

Later, Pule was given a similar opportunity after being sent one-on-one by Musa Nyatama, but opted for the same sequence as his teammate with a powering attempt.

In the final minutes, Stars threw everything forward to probe the visitors defence but there was simply no way through, leaving Bucs to join Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stages.

Subs: Mpontshane, Mako, Mbekile, Qalinge, Gabuza, Mntambo, Makola.
