Radebe sends Wits packing

Posted: 26 October 2008 Time: 17:27

David Radebe condemned his former teammates when he opened the scoring for his side on Sunday afternoon at the Olympia Stadium.

Premier League leaders Bidvest Wits concede their first goals of the 2008/09 season when they lost 2-0 to Moroka Swallows in the Telkom Knockout.

A first half with little chances saw two teams in the top half of the Premier League table struggling to find fluidity and cohesiveness in the midfield which consequently resulted in a scrappy affair in Rustenburg.

The first chance of the game only came in the 15th minute when a nice passing movement by Swallows found Phumelele Bhengu 12 yards out from goal, but unfortunately for the Birds he dragged his snap-shot just wide.

The first 45 minutes produced hardly any goal mouth action. It took the genius of Rodger De Sa to change the perspective of the game when he implemented a switching of flanks between Clifford Mulenga and Sofiso Myeni. The Young African Player of the Year, Mulenga, was completely marked out of the game on the left flank, and with his switch to the right side of midfield Myeni was left free to roam down the left wing.

This almost paid dividends in the 39th minute when Myeni drove down the left flank and played a ball into the edge of the box where Marawaan Bantam was then fouled. Marawaan struck the resulting free-kick low and hard: the ball beat the wall, and it beat the keeper, but it failed to hit the back of the net as the ball struck the right hand up-right.

Two minutes later Myeni attacked down the left again beating a couple of players before laying the ball back to Bantam once more who struck a fierce shot straight at the keeper.

Despite Wits coming closest in the half it was Bhengu who had the last say before the half-time whistle when he broke down the middle of the Student's defence skinning one defender to put himself through on goal. However, Energy Murambadoro was quick off his line and Bhengu failed to beat him as he pulled off a fantastic one-on-one save.

Wits came out in the second half looking more enthusiastic and persisted with their attack down the flanks, but it was not them who drew first blood.

In the 56th minute of the game the Clever Boys conceded their first goal of the 2008/09 season; after a frantic goal mouth scramble saw the ball eventually fall to David Radebe who showed some great composure to shift the ball onto his weaker left foot before striking the ball home, 1-0 Swallows.

Five minutes later Bhengu had a golden opportunity to double his team's lead when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper again. He did all the hard work to beat another couple of Wits defenders before lifting the ball over Murambadoro and the cross-bar.

With the nature of the cup competition and the loser going home De Sa took of Wits defender Ashraf Hendricks and threw on a striker in the form of Dale Studzinski.

However, with the Students in an all out attack to equalize, they left themselves vulnerable to the counter attack. They were made to pay in the 91st minute when Lefa Tsutsulupa broke down the left and provided a great through ball for Mark Haskins who made no mistake in slotting the ball past the keeper, 2-0, and wrapping up the game.
