Bay United stun Pirates

Posted: 28 September 2008 Time: 17:40

Bay United have shocked Orlando Pirates with a 2-0 victory over the Buccaneers in an Absa Premiership clash at the EPRU Stadium on Sunday.

With only a point in the kitty after two matches, it looks like a Herculean task for the struggling yet talented Pirates this season.

Such a pathetic display despite having a coach with massive experience has clearly sent a message to other PSL teams that Pirates are no longer the invincible force they used to be.

For United, this was a good day at the office as they followed instructions diligently in their attempt to eliminate their one season-wonder label.

United started with an array of experienced campaigners led by veteran Patrick Mayo who did a sterling job in protecting well traveled Arthur Bartman in goal.

The hosts were never intimidated by their more fancied opponents, as they thwarted Pirates' moves with ease. And when they forced Pirates 'keeper

Moeneeb Josephs to make a save as early as the ninth minute, United showed what a determined side they were.

Just five minutes before the interval, Bucs had to do some desperate defending as United applied the pressure relentlessly.

Sensing danger, Pirates' under-fire coach Rudi Krol was forced to replace winger Joseph Makhanya with newly-signed Dikgang Mabalane, but his

introduction did nothing to worry the fearless United side with Gareth Ncaca calling the shots from the centre of the park.

And when Nigerian striker Adebayo Abayomi turned to beat the hapless Josephs four minutes after the break, Krol knew that he needed something special to break the robust United defence, which was growing in confidence.

Even a free kick from reliable Pirates schemer Teko Modise in the 54th minute could do nothing to help the sinking ship.

In attempt to close shop, United introduced former Kaizer Chiefs captain Cyril Nzama, and Luntu Mazana added a stunning second, giving United every reason to celebrate their first win since gaining promotion.

Everything at pirates is wrong.Today's game proved how over arted Teko Modise really is.He doesn't have the physic and the brains to a great player, notfor now ayway.I have seen youngsters turn out for Pirates who can really do a proper job for the team, but reputations seem to the preferred option.

I am just hoping that all those clubs who are regarded as small clubs, start to be competitive just like Bay United and Maritzburg United. Well I must agree, Teko is overrated. I didnt find anything spectacular about him over the recent games. Vukani Bhaka-bhaka vukani!

3 games 0 goals,1 point & only half chances upfront this is a disaster. it seems as if papic`s era is back. good ballplayers who can carry a ball from 18 2 18 but with no goals, this days it`s entertainment with good results otherwise u follow papic. I did watch Pirates but I did not see a real good chance created 4rm the middle of the park so we can`t blame strikers at all. Lets teach mr Modise 2 release the ball in time, we know he`s good @ drabling but pls only do that 4 a purpose otherwise u close spase 4 Adriano & Walaza.Good management, good technical staff & good material with no direction.

Is the writer of this article a Pierats fan or what? Seems like he's trying to find reasons to justify Pierats loss, from poor oficiating, to wind, to bumpy pitch, etc. Come on bra, Pierats was walloped today, whether you like it or not. You've never said anything good about Bay United players or their approach to the game. All you yap yap about is how unlucky Pierats was to loose.... What a one sided artice. Anyway, that Songwiqi boy was a marvel to watch. What a goal by Pierats reject Luntu Mazana, a cracker indeed. Congrats Bay United.

SOCIAL STATUS VERSUS UNDEFEATABILITY

it is actually good to start by looking back and say PIRATES and Chips have each taken the league title twice. So, there is nothing that Kaizer chips have that is special. Furthermore, chips are at the moment not actually dong well because they can only specialize on penalties in order to win the an trophy and they actually haven't proven to be any team to envy thus far. of course, a win is a win, but a win doesn't always reflect quality. my point here is that there is nothing that chips can say to PIEATES that might mean anything or hold any water. Maybe unless people just want to go crazy and emotional, which is something that anyone can do anyway. worthwhle to unashamably mention is the fact that SUNDOWNS STILL REMAIN THE BEST team in the history of the PSL, with chips and PIRATES, coming next. this is the truth we can't dispute in any case.

having said that, it is also good to note that status doesn't mean all-powerful. TH PSL condition has actually redefined our soccer. now we can only talk about teams that have social status versus those that have got no social status. so it is good to note that social status does not mean a team can always win games.

there is always a challenge with social status because the more of it the more the burden. it is actually undeniable that anything in life that have a huge social status is always a centre of atraction. this in itself comes with very high expectations that can sometimes prove to be ridiculous. remember that social status in itself means huge fans and supporters, fear and anxiety, etc. but that does not mean anything if we can understand that the amount of presure lies very much in only that.

it is then interesting that social status needs to be protected by everyone in the team, especially the players with their atitude and dedication. social status comes with too much responsibility that can sometimes be impossible to carry. no team can always win games. but this is how many supporters and fans break from certain teams to certain teams, whether this is good or not i dont know. but i just know that it is actually pointless because every team does always have good and bad curves at the moment. this PSL is well balanced, maybe that one. what i know best is that there is no more team that can be happy forever in the league, no team has ever proven to be consistent anyway. but i also know tat, under wichever circumstances, some teams are equal than others. hence there are relegation material and pillars of the PSL. no one can ever imagine the PSL without PIRATES, Sundowns, and chps, maybe and MOROKA SWALLOWS. all other teams can go but this ones will never go. maybe after the socand coming of jesus chriest. and that day, the sun might rise from the west. that might be a redifinition of the universe.

but, after all, ONCE A PIRATE, ALWAYS A PIRATE.I ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT I PUT THIS TEAM INFRONT OF MY OWN INTERESTS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I WILL SINK WITH IT INTO MY GRAVE AND RISE WITH IT AS A GHOST. EVEN IF I LAY DOWN MY EVERYTHING, EVEN MY LIFE, FOR THIS TEAM, IT IS OK.

IT IS NOT HOW YOU START, BUT HOW YOU FINISH, THIS IS A COMRADE MARATHON. IN THEIR LAST GAME OF THE LEAGUE, BLACK LEOPARD FRIED AND EATEN THE CHIPS, BUT THEY ARE NOW CAMPAINGNING IN THE FIRST DIVISION. THANDA ROYAL ZULU DID THE SAME, BUT THEY HAD TO CONTEST FOR THE PROMOTION PLAY-OFFS. THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR.
