Bidvest Wits and ten-man Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw in the Absa Premiership’s top-of-the-table clash on Saturday evening.
Both sides started with two changes. Mosa Lebusa and Phakamani Mahlambi were brought in for Sundowns, while Gavin Hunt brought in Keagen Ritchie and Fagrie Lakay.
Careless defending from Wits was punished after just six minutes by their former player Mahlambi, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Gift Motupa went close to securing the equaliser a few minuets later, but his header hit the frame of the post after superb delivery from Ritchie.
With 30 minutes gone, a dismal first touch from Ricardo Nascimento created a perfect invitation for Motupa to invade and finish into the bottom to level matters.
Masandawana were then reduced to 10 men moments later after Wayne Arendse saw red for a professional foul on Lakay, although Deon Hotto was unable to take advantage of the numbers with a poor finish before the break.
Wits made a change at the start of the second half, with Ritchie making way for the renowned Elias Pelembe as the hosts pushed for a winning goal.
Gavin Hunt’s charges persistence for a second goal didn’t stop there, as Lakay’s glancing header sailed wide of Denis Onyango's upright on 51 minutes.
Wits kept coming though, and Sifiso Hlanti flashed a left-foot shot into the side-netting as the home side were desperate for a second goal.
Sundowns suffered another set-back, as Onyango was unable to continue following a collision and was replaced by Reyaad Pieterse on 74 minutes.
Chances at either end were few and far between in the latter stages of the half as the spoils were shared in the top-of-the-table clash.
The Brazilians remain in second spot, but they can move top with a victory over Cape Town City on Wednesday evening.
