Absa Premiership match report SuperSport United v Mamelodi Sundowns 02 December 2018

Posted: 2 December 2018 Time: 13:52

Mamelodi Sundowns closed the gap on Orlando Pirates with a 2-1 win over SuperSport United in the Tshwane derby.

SuperSport were pushed back early on when a deep cross from Lyle Lakay found Jeremy Brockie who headed over the top from 14-yards out.

Minutes later, Lebogang Maboe was allowed space to turn inside the box to get a first-time shot away but it also sailed wide of goal.

It was a matter of time before Downs went in front when Maboe found the bottom corner with a stunning 20-yard strike on 10 minutes.

In order to stay in front, Sundowns needed a superb save from Denis Onyango to keep out a 24-yard free-kick effort from Richard Boateng four minutes later.

Youngster Teboho Mokoena was afforded the time to get inside the box, take on a few defenders before getting a shot wide of target.

Running riot down the wing, Thapelo Morena used his speed to good effect to set up a chance for Gaston Sirino but the Uruguayan slipped before trying to get a shot away.

The advantage was doubled when Maboe played Lyle Lakay into space to finish off from an acute angle into the far corner.

This forced United to make an immediate substitution, as Boateng made way for veteran full-back Onismor Bhasera.

Two minutes to the break, United made another substitution as Kaitano Tembo brought out Phumlani Ntshangase for Aubrey Modiba.

Following the restart, SuperSport started more promising and found a few spaces in the opposing defences to set-up half-chances for among others Evans Rusike.

The Brazilians had the chance to make it three, but after good work from Sirino to set up Themba Zwane, the winger couldn’t take advantage after shooting from inside the box.

SuperSport introduced their third and final change with Ghampa Lungu coming on for Rusike and with Downs sitting back, United pulled a goal back.

An in-swinging free-kick from Modiba found Morgan Gould, who ran at the far post to volley past Onyango on 66 minutes.

Sundowns called on their men from the bench, with a double switch in Toni Silva and Aubrey Ngoma in the final stages.

Silva intercepted a ball off Modiba to go one-on-one with Ronwen Williams, but horribly missed the chance to increase the lead with a wayward finish, although Downs managed to hold on for the win.
