Absa Premiership match report Free State Stars v Bloemfontein Celtic 06 October 2018

Posted: 6 October 2018 Time: 13:15

Free State Stars moved into the top eight with a 2-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic to claim the Free State bragging rights in the Absa Premiership.

Neither side dominated the earlier moments in the basing sun of Bethlehem. That said, Celtic looked more comfortable on the ball and break.

Stars also looked good in certain moments with their fast-pace forward movements, but the few shots from Harris Tchilimbou and Linda Bhengu couldn’t penetrate the opposing defence.

On 18 minutes, Celtic failed to punish poor defending when Tshegofatso Mabasa went one-on-one with Sangara but embarrassingly missed the target with a wayward shot.

Chances continued to subside though Stars were unfortunate to not have a penalty awarded after Goodman Dlamini was bumped off the ball by Lorenzo Gordinho.

Just after the half and hour mark, Siwelele picked up the momentum and Ndumiso Mabena’s low free-kick from outside the box narrowly missed the target.

Ea Lla Koto broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when Tchilimbou out-jumped the defence to head in a cross from out wide.

A swerving shot from the returning Nyiko Mobbie from 30-yards forced an acrobatic tip over the bar from Patrick Tignyemb five minutes to halftime.

Trailing by a goal, Celtic decided to ruffle the feathers and on came attacker Tebogo Potsane after 50 minutes.

Sangare raced off the line to thwart Menzi Masuku from creeping in at the near post. Gordinho missed from close range after rising to meet a high ball after 55 minutes played.

Winger Sinethemba Jantjie doubled the lead with an exquisite lob into the far corner after spotting Patrick Tignyemb off his line.

The visitors made their third and final change in pursuit of a come back, as Victor Letsoalo took position upfront.

Stars though were in another mood though after Jantjie’s low free-kick forced Tignyemb scrambling to a one-handed block the midway stage.

Luc Eymael made his very first substitution on the 68th minute when Yusuf Jappie came on for the hard-working Jantjie.

The game certainly came to live but it was Stars with all the attacking and Mpho Maruping rattled the post with a low effort from outside the box.

In the final minutes, there were chances at either end but failure to rattle the net ended the contest in favour of the home side.
